    Let me get this straight..
I am an uber newb at this, so please have pitty on my confused head..

I have a normal. This weekend im going to an expo and looking for a pastel or super pastel.. whichever i can find that tickles my fancy and meets my checkbooks demand.

If i match the pastel with my normal - i will get some normal babis and het for pastel babies. I will then need to take the het for pastel babies and recross them with the father to get a true pastel - am I 100% correct on this? lol....
but! if i would happy to be lucky (and im sure im not) and my current normal (which i dont know the background on) is het for anything, I will not get different color unless its het for pastel.

Am I right, or just confusing everyone?

Pastel is a co-dominant trait so if you get a regular pastel and cross it with your normal, you will get some pastels and some normals. If you get a super pastel and you cross it with your normal will you get all pastels.

1st you need to read all the sticky threads on genetics :taz:!!!!

you're thinking of recessive genes. but pastels are co-dominant.

    normal + co dom = 50% normal 50% co-dom.

your logic would be true if we're talking about a pied or albino...etc.

Wrong :colbert:.There is no such thing as het for pastel its co-dom.If you bred a pastel to a normal you should get half pastels, half normals. If you bred a super pastel to a normal majority of the babies will be pastels. If you bred a pastel to a pastel you get supers :gj:

I thought if you take the super form to a normal you would get all pastels:confused: As said in the quoted post.

Actually if you cross a pastel to a pastel only 25% of the babies would be super pastel, 50% pastel, and 25% would be normal. I'm sure you knew this but I was just clarifying for the beginners so they don't expect an entire clutch of supers.

    Pastel x Normal = 50% Pastel 50% Normal
    Super Pastel x Normal = 100% Pastel

That is correct. If you breed a super pastel to a normal, all of the babies will be pastels.

Pastel IS the "het" form of Super Pastels, if you want to look at it that way. But pastels are co-dominant, which means the "hets" are visible. That is what a regular pastel is. A visual "het" for super pastel.

If you breed a Pastel To a Normal you will get 50% normal and 50% pastels.

If you breed a Super Pastel to a Normal, ALL the babies will be pastels.

If you breed Pastel to Pastel, you will get normals and pastels, and a chance to hit on super pastels. It's all in the odds.

Pastels are codominant, the genetics you are describing (the OP) are recessive genetics.

Codominant means that the snakes' phenotype (what it looks like) is expressed AND looks different in both the heterozygous (1 gene for pastel, 1 gene for normal) and the homozygous (2 genes for pastel) forms.

When you breed the snakes, each one gives one gene, so a super pastel having both genes for pastel can only give the gene for pastel, so all the offspring are going to be minimum pastels.

A pastel can give a gene for normal, OR a gene for pastel. So that snake can produce pastels or normals.

Any normals produced are normals, with no genes for pastel, as if they had the gene it would be expressed (visible).

One gene is a lovely pastel. :)

Two genes is a smokin' super pastel. :)

    Pastel X Normal: 50% pastels - 50% normals

    Superpastel X Normal: 100% pastels

    Pastel X Pastel: 25% normal, 50% pastels, 25% superpastels

    Superpastel X Pastel: 50% pastels, 50% superpastels.
