Humidity problems

I recently got a new hygro it has probes as where my old hygro did not it was a dial. The probe is smack dab in the middle.Apparently my humidity had been in the mid to low 40's even with the top covered in towels and misting the humidity seems to lower back down with in the hour. I have a 40g tank A uth and a lamp on the cool end keeping th ambient air in the 80's. Is there any other tricks any 1 has for humidity?

40% isn't horrible -- higher would be preferred, especially when the snake is in shed.

What kind of substrate are you using? From the little experience I have; I have learned that from best to worst for humidity retention is cypress, aspen, and newspaper. I was having trouble with humidity as well. I switched from newspaper to cypress, and that has helped.

You can also put some damp moss (available at most pet stores that have reptile supplies) in the hides when the snake is in shed to help the shedding process.

Coconut fibre is great for holding humidity! The lamp is killing your humidity! Cover the top with plastic wrap or foil to lock in the heat and humidity but leave about a 1/4 open for air! A 40 gallon tank would be very hard to keep the humidity up!

i seemed to have stablized it with moving around the lamp .... but how would i keep up the temps if i were to get rid of the lamp ?

What is the ambient temperature in the room? What is the temp of your hot side? I have a 40 gallon breeder and my cool side stays at around 80 F just by keeping the hot side 90-93 F with a UTH. It does suck trying to keep up humidity though I may switch to a tub soon. Unless I decide I'm going to get a rack in the near future.

ill haveto get back on the ambient temp as i live in a basement and it gets pretty cold especcialy since i live in ny ..... With the uth i have a probe right on top what should the probe be reading to heat the cypress up to 90-93 i have about a inch and a half of cypress

It may be better to measure the temperature of the glass above the heater incase the snake moves the substrate, which is often the case. Also, if you put a towel over the top, it will help keep in both the humidity and the heat. I do that for my 30 gallon wide. Works great, although the temp does drop a little at night.

Btw my basement is about 70 Degrees
