What Happens If A Snake Bites You and It Has An RI?

Where my friend (BcMyori--she's new to the site) and I volunteer we do deal with sick snakes with RIs because we got a lot of them from the Texas seizure http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...Exotics+seized. Would anything happen to us if a snake with an RI would bite either one of us? We were just curious to know this question because we don't want to stress the snakes out when we have them secured by the head in case they were to bite us. We just want to handle them in calm manner without having to grab their head. From being there I've noticed if you handle a snake with respect, your not scared when you handle it, and if you handle it gently it will feel no threat towards you, even if the snake is aggressive.

All the baby albino Burms we got are all aggressive and hissers and have no problem biting if they feel threatend. One of the volunteers handled one of the Burms and it didn't feel threatend enough to turn around and bite or go into a defensive posture.

You'd cry and bleed.. LOL

No the stuff that causes RI's are naturally occurring in the mouth and nasal cavity of most reptiles. Normally their immune system keeps in in check. But when the immune system is lowered or out of whack the normally harmless bacteria moves in to the Respiratory tract and poof RI..

So getting bite by a snake with an RI doesn't put you at any risk of some weirdo jungle rot infection

You would probaly go off feed for several months, make bubbles in your mouth and seek the warm end of your house!!! LOL...no harm other than a normal snake bite.

You will become radioactive, want to feed upon the flesh of rodents, and seek out warm spots underground. Then your skin will start become more and more scaley with every shed. :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Other than picking snake teeth out of your hand and swearing like a sailor, you will be fine. i would however watch out for infection. Treat the wound, don't take any chances. But that should be done when biten by any snake regardless of the snake's health.

I would have to agree with everyone else.

The only thing you want to worry about is a bite infection. Just put some peroxide on it and after that put neosporin and keep it clean with a bandaide so when you are cleaning other cages you don't get ick in the bite.

I typically do not use peroxide normally...as it can cause the area to dry out. However ....I feel a little better with that when it is a bite from a reptile or animal (especially a dog or cat)...as sometimes it can cause an infection. I was bit by a monitor...not bad...did not hurt...but bled like crazy. I washed it out with peroxide...put neo on it and a bandaide. In 2 days....you just saw a little cut left.

just some saline water to kill the germs and preventing yourself to turn into a were-snake, LOL

no seriously some saline water is enough!

EDIT: mistake, i think that doesn't kill viruses, so antiseptic would be better :P
