    Giving up my cats? :(
Well, I plan on getting engaged to my long time girlfriend sometime this year.

I currently have an apartment by myself with my 2 cats that are 5 and 6 years old.

Her little brother and sister are allergic to them.

I know when I go to buy a house this is going to be a pain in the butt. I already told her I will look for a good home because I dont get attached to animals.

But.............the more and more I think about it I think I will be heart broken. It's going to suck bad.

    Are their any other alternatives?

    Like avoiding allergies and stuff?

And what is the best way to find a good home if this is the case? They must NOT be split up what so ever.

They arent but they will want to visit and stuff.

They are a huge Italian family so all those get togethers are constantly happening.

    It sucks.

Not to be rude or anything..but your not required to make her family comfortable. Keep your cats, you shouldn't have to give you your beloved pets because your brother and sister in-law might visit and might have an allergic reaction.

That's really quite selfish to ask or expect that of you..

I wouldnt give them up in that case NO WAY NO HOW...

If their allergic then they dont have to visit....

They can take some allergy stuff before they come over....

Get togethers can be held at another house....

I thought they were going to be living with you guys.

No man, I wouldnt even THINK about getting rid of my cats in this case.

You are both right. Maybe I really need to just step up and voice my opinion.

It's not an opinion its your right..Her family doesn't have a say in what pet you keep..Now she might..but don't start bending over so soon..make it know now that the pets stay..and doing like there's no other choice.

I agree with what everyone else has said. It is extremely selfish of her family to ask you to rehome the cats just because of occasional visits with allergic children. There are over the counter and prescription meds available to deal with this kind of allergy. If the kids were allergic to pollen, would the family lock themselves in the house and ask everyone to change their clothes and shower before entering their home to prevent an allergic reaction?
If you do decide that must rehome them, however, I would recommend seeking the assistance of a reputable rescue. Check the rescue's adoption process as well as their surrender process, so you have an idea of how adoptive families are found, ask for references, check with local SPCA's to see if they work with the rescue. Make sure they are not for profit and check for 501c3 non-profit status. If you can find a rescue that is willing to help, please consider making a donation to the rescue. All of our rescues are inundated with pets that have been turned in due to the economy or changing laws and donations are way down. Good luck with whatever you decide to do and if you need help finding a reputable rescue, feel free to pm me and I'll do what I can.

No way should you even consider giving up your cats! I am allergic to both of my cats but I take allergy medicine. There is no way I would ever give up my cats even though I am allergic to them.
