    Winter is for the birds...
I got some new camera equipment for Christmas, so I needed to break it in before the serious herping starts this season. If I can get decent shots of birds, I hope to have no trouble with reptiles :) Thought I would share some pictures from the last couple of weeks.

All of these were taken in Florida Mardi Gras vacation, so I have no idea of the identifications. Birds are birds :)

Canon Rebel Xsi with a 70-200mm f/4L USM lense. If you shoot a Canon and do a lot outdoors in good light, the lens is top notch and relatively inexpensive for the quality. I have not been disappointed so far and can't wait to get ahold of some wild reptiles.

All of those pictures were taken around a park area. The birds were a little accustomed to people so I could get in a bit closer. I tried to shoot some birds out in the swamp this weekend. Got some decent shots, but nowhere near as close.

How much did that lense run? I have an Xsi and I'm looking for a reasonable priced mid/long range lense to work with. Also is it a telephoto?

It is a telezoom lense. The lowest price L glass available at around $750. I can't remember the exact price off the to of my head. Picked it up at bhphoto.com...they have the cheapest prices and great service. It works with the 1.4x teleextender too. If you plan on doing any shots in low light. At f/4 and without IS you need to shoot with abfast shutter speed or a tripod.
