Thermostat Probe Placement

Ok, I've been looking around for the answer to this one for awhile but can't find much. I have a cornsnake and a western hognose. Where should I have the thermostate probe placed? Right on the glass above the uth or on top of the substrate? My temps are around 82-86 degrees when placed on the glass. But of course I don't get that 90-some degree hot spot. Also, I can't get my cool side temps up. They are staying around 66-70. I have a towel over the screen to try and hold heat in but it didn't make a difference. And of course my hognose seems to like to chill over on the cool side all the time :rolleyes: Any advice? Thanks so much!

The Thermostat probe is best placed in between the UTH and the bottom of the glass tank. This will help prevent the probe from being misplaced and therefore allowing the UTH to overheat. The thermometer probe should be placed on the inside of the tank, on the glass over the UTH.

As for the cool side, you could cover 3 sides of the tank with foam board. It worked for me. :)

The probe goes above the UTH on the glass.Your temps are way to high for corns.The range should be 80 to 82 not 90 ;).

Ok, so the probe is ok then. My temps for the corn are around 81 degrees. :) The caresheets for them usually say that they need a basking spot of 90 degrees but I don't see how that is possible without overheating the whole place. So far now, they don't have a basking spot, but they digest there meals ok so I'm not too worried. I'll also try the foam board. Hopefully that will help. NY is just too cold this time of the year :(. Thanks!

i keep my corns at 83-85, and there fine, acutally i keep all my colubrids at 85 range
