Re: odd breeding question
some in most cases keep them and treat them as there own but with the mind set that they will sell eventually lowering the price......in regards to rack well its always best to accomodate to what u have plus some......but dont decide to get into the hobby because of dollar signs....cause you need to sink some money in before you make money and establish your self and create a name......its not as easy as its put out to be......but u must have a passion for it
thanks

oh I know i never planned on breeding for the profit I was just thinking of the possible issues i have over the next few years if I try to breed only 2-3 clutchs ayear and was unable to sellthe ones I didn't want to keep. I know how fast the room goes with just the rescued snakes I got.. I have been finding some homes but there still some here I don't think are ready mainly cause I don't know their sex. I hate to send ap erson a snake and they find out it a male and I though female .. type deal.
Re: odd breeding question
First, to mechnut450, my suggestion is to build a rack with space for 6qt bins. You can keep your hatchlings in there for at least a few months, it wouldn't have to be very big to accommidate even 12 bins, which should be tons for whatever doesn't sell right away, at least while you're only hatching 2-3 clutches.
Secondly, I feel two sets of internet police must be called on steavelee2. Both the "Thread Hijacking" police and the "YourSigIsWayTooDamnedLong" police. Srsly.
Re: odd breeding question
lol I built 2x 10+ bit racks, I got one with only 6 snakes in it . I prolly should of posted the question more aloing the lines of how oftens do some breeders on here have babies that don't sell? I am only planned on 2 possible clutchs this year the one I wanted ( het pieds to het pied does not look like she graivd yet still willing to eat and the albino to normal which may be gravid since she refusing food still)
after that I may breed only 1 or 2 a year see how well it goes...
Re: odd breeding question
First of all every year prior to putting anything up for sale I go through and descide what we are "holding back" these are animals that will not be offered for sale. The others go up for sale. The thing that gets people in trouble is that they don't expect to have to feed and house babies for 8 months or even a year or more.
Be prepaired to house and feed every snake you hatch till the day it dies. cause you might have to..
When stuff doesn't sale it just get's bigger, except for females. If I have a female that stay's till she get to be 800+ grams she is no longer for sale. Being half way to breeding weight means she more valuable as a breeder than a for sale item..
Just my two cents

am always perpared to do this, I even go with this in mind when I rescue( recieve )a bp that no longer wanted. ( that why out of 19 snakesI obnly purchased7 snakes hatch 2 out and the other 10 are rescued/abandoned snakes in my care. feeding them won't be much of a problem once I know that I can order more rodents or aquire more stock. My main problem has always been the lack of proper reptile room( building since I live on a fixed income and support my habit though odd jobs during the summer) the winter ( this year mostly cause I had to replace the truck and it was not planned for just making it a little tight this winter) I sold my laptop since the state decided they need more profit off everyone hobby. It just been the weather had prevented the guy from coming to get it .
I think I will limited my reptile producing to 1 clutch a year unless I know that the other clutch would sell..
I only will breed the next few years to try and produce my pied, and axanthic, work on a bel and a possible combo if i have the room.
AS for selling any snake over a set weight like a 800+ female I only do that if I know I may need the room and they person is responsible..( another word they not tossing her once she drops the clutch types I would not like to deal with since they only after profit )I hate these kind of people. If anything I would enjoy trading snake around ( example: I produce a pied would be open to trading for a bee or stomething like that since i have limited fundsfor buying more snakes lol) Was planning to go to cambridge show in a few weeks but betwee nthe weather and limited fund not gonig ot happen( unless someone interested in a couple unsexed 1200 gram bps lol JOKING)
Re: odd breeding question
I think of the most important questions you have to ask yourself before you breed any animal is how many you are going to plan to keep, can you sell them, or can you find a local distributor to sell them to.
The gentelman that I buy all my snakes from is a distributor and he says he will buy hatchlings from me. Don't get me wrong, you will get a better price if they are feeding well or older, but sometimes housing them if your not able to sell them is more work that its worth.
I'm not planning on becoming a huge breeder myself, but if I cannot privately sell the snakes that I want to individually, I'm going to my distributor to unload them. Its not realistic for me to hold on to snakes that I have to wait years to sell. To me I will get to attached and I'm ended up with this huge collection.
