Wanting a complete & comprehensive guide to California kingsnake morphs?

Hello everyone. I have never posted in the kingsnake forums before. So I thank you for your patients. I am looking for a complete and comprehensive guide to all known California Kingsnake morphs and their genetic inheratince. Any help is greatly appreciated as I have been breeding Calis for a couple of years now and I am unsure as to how the different colors and patterns are pasted from parent to offspring {example dominant, codominant, resessive}.Thanks in advance for all your help, Eyeball.:confused:

You should check out Brian Hubbs' books. He has one book on Common Kingsnakes (includes your California Kings), and another book on Mountain Kings. Both go into GREAT detail about pretty much all of the subspecies of kingsnakes.

You should check out www.applegatereptiles.com and also pickup Robert Applegates book "Kingsnakes and Milksnakes in Captivity".

He has excellent info and is one of the tops in the field. I have the book and have met Bob at several shows, he is a great and informative guy.

One of the most interesting facets of breeding Calkings is the variety of offspring you can get. Unless you know generations of history, there is no way to say for certain what you'll get when eggs hatch.

Going on 25 years ago, perhaps a tad more, there was a boom in Calkings and they were not bred from specific locality to specific locality all the time. There were thousands produced for the pet trade and by private breeders.

This is one of my favorite species and I still get new things from time to time out of parents that you would never suspect of carrying genes to produce such odd pattern and colour morphs.

Then, when you consider that the black and white desert phase and the brown and yellow coastal phase mix to produce even more snakes that look like neither parent, you'll go crazy trying to guess what you'll get.

Plus, since they are such a genetic hodgepodge, you get colours and patterns that skip generations, seemingly, and popup completely unexpectedly.

It's a darn shame the babies are such pissants, as a rule, because they are one of the best pet snakes you can get.

Wow......other than a sixty dollar book by Brian Hubbs, there really isnt any well written comprehensive lists or guides to the genetics and/or morphs of the cali kingsnake. How sad is that, one of the most popular snakes around and i cant find the info i looking for. I would have thought there would have been more research and info available for such a popular snake:confused:

I must have hit the cali king lottery, because none of mine (3 so far) have been pissants as babies. They're SO much calmer than my milks are!

Amen, all my calis are excelent snakes, good eaters and rarely to nippy. Theyre also very very easy to breed. A very awsome breed of king to work with!!!!

I'm just ordered an albino lavender calking (banded) from my friend. I just wonder, what will be the result of mixing banded albino lavender calking with stripped albino calking :)

I love their eyes very much ... is caring calking easier than caring ball python ?

You'll get double hets, het to lav and het to albino, with some crazy patterns. i hope u enjoy breeding calkings as much as i have and good luck.
