GREENVILLE, S.C. -- When the bell rang outside Augusta Circle Elementary school, students were greeted by a PETA volunteer dressed in a wounded elephant costume.
Students were greeted by a PETA volunteer dressed in an elephant costume.
Most children failed to notice the elephant also wore a bandage.
The PETA volunteers didn't preach about animal abuse but handed out coloring books brandishing images of sad elephants in chains who lived at the circus. The books, entitled "Animals Belong In The Jungle," were used to dissuade children from attending the upcoming Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus which is set to arrive in Greenville Feb 17.
"If children knew how animals suffer behind the scenes, their smiles would quickly turn to frowns," said PETA director Debbie Leahy.
Most parents didn't get involved, but one outraged mother took a stand. As the children boarded the bus she stood between them and the volunteers and reminded the children not to talk to strangers.
"I love the First Amendment. Everyone has a right to speak their mind. Problem is this is the wrong venue for PETA to be talking about the circus. We have nothing to do with the circus.PETA is known for having their demonstrations get out of hand in a radical way. It puts children in danger," said Leslie Martin, as she waited for her son to be dismissed.
Greenville police were present and maintained order during the short-lived protest.

Re: PETA-Filez How Low Can you Go!
They've actually been doing things like this for years, my question is, why are these jerks allowed on school grounds in the first place?

Someone STILL needs to give them permission to be on school grounds. I can't even be in my own kids school during school hours unless I sign in at the office and get a name tag. I'm pretty sure that also covers protests staged on school grounds.

We have all seen the video report about how PETA put healthy animals (puppies and kitten... not puppies and kittens) to sleep because they think they are setting the animals free and we have all seen petakillsanimals.com. Why do they even bother?
They do nothing but waste money on pointless campaigns (remember the sea kitten ads?), and putting on these stupid things. They have the money and media coverage to do alot of good yet they do the most stupid things and everyone laughs at them.

Its a fedral offense (pretty sure but not 100%) to go onto school grounds with out permission, most times you have to go to the office and sing in, then you can be on school grounds, but lots of child abuductions are because people walking onto campus's with out permission. At my school we have intruder alerts (always drills, never a real incident), but they have them incase someone is spotted with out a visators pass and all the doors are locked, no one is alowed in the halls and we must turn class lights off. Just a lil info on the process
