Id like to think i know somthing about genetics... BUUUTTT....

Ok, so id like to think i know quite a bit about genetics...
BUT i have a question, and its probably a simple/dumb one haha


so for example

Black Pastel X Black Pastel = 25% norm, 50% Black Pastels, and 25% Supers..
(in theory)
then super x normal = 100% Black Pastels..
BUT!

what about those compatible morph supers? such as : lesser x mojo, mojo x butter, black pastel x cinny.... etc etc etc.


So say i get a Bel, which was made with a Mojo and Lesser...
and i bred the Bel to a Normal...

would i get both mojos and lessers? or... all one and none of the other?

Ive never came across this case... and i just thought about it...

Yes, you would get mojos and lessers.

This is a great question. Same goes for a Lesser x Butter Leucy. If the Leucy is bred, how do you go about telling which are Lessers and which are Butters? You'd need to know to sell them...

If you can't distinguish the two and the genetics behave the same...then what is the difference?


To the OP:

Have you ever studied Punnett squares? If you have a basic understanding of how they work and the genetics you're dealing with (whether it's simple recessive, codom, etc), there are some good sites online that will calculate them out for you. Here's one I use sometimes (it allows you to name genes and add multiple alleles, which is nice)

Which is why you'd be daft to do this pairing.

Most breeders I know stick to one or the other in their collection.

Butter and lesser are effectively the same gene, they came about from two different originating snakes and so came to be named differently. All combos and the super behave and look exactly the same and anyone who tells you they can pick a lesser from a butter is fibbing :)

Both genes are very variable, our lesser male was more 'yellow' as a hatchling than a lot of butters i've seen and equally there are some 09cb butters for sale that are as dark as the darkest lesser.


I've seen adult example of some of the 'het BEL' snakes (butter, lesser and mojave) that you could have swapped them about and you wouldn't have known which was which other than by the labels on the tubs.
