Re: Hypothetical question
see the thing is with those online suppliers is the shipping!! The prices are fine, but once you factor in the shipping your screwed. Breeding really is the way to go when you have a lot of snakes. Once you hit 10 I would say breeding is a good idea. If you could look into rat breeders around you. I was actually able to find one by me that was an hour away and I had to pay 90 cents a rat!! Gas wasn't too bad either so it worked out. I was paying 5 dollars a rat, making it 50 bucks a week to feed my animals!! Go to expo's and stock up there, and invest in a small freezer to store them. I breed now and love it because I don't have to worry about going anywhere. The smell isn't that bad either if you keep up with it. Where do you live? I could refer you to my breeder if your the hudson valley ny region.
Re: Hypothetical question
Find a smaller store like an exotics store for example. I have a exotics local store that carries every size of mouse and Rat in existence because they breed their own.
Re: Hypothetical question
Check with who ever you prefer to deal with (petsmart) or a mom and pops shop to see if they do bulk orders. They may or may not charge you for s & h. Maybe even a local breeder (snake or rodent) that has their own colony and has some extras they're willing to sell.
Re: Hypothetical question
The good thing is that a male does not really require a medium or large rat to thrive, small rat weekly will do.
Now when it comes to those company their price is reasonable it is just that you need to order bulk 100 rats at the time so it is worth it.
Your best options are either your local pet store or picking up your rodent at a local herp show if there is one near you.

I agree, I usually buy in 2-3 month supplies and it will usually eat the shipping up to the point that it is still way lower than if I was buying from a petstore.
Re: Hypothetical question
If you have a PETCO near you, I've found they've got a larger selection (small, med, large, jumbo), frozen of course! They're still pricier than buying from a breeder or in bulk...but they're good in a pinch or if you only have one or two snakes.
Re: Hypothetical question
When you order on those sites, large orders get free shipping. While alot may come out of your pocket at once, you wont need to worry about food for months. 15 rats is 15 weeks per snake. Thats nearly 4 months.
Free shipping is orders over 100. Grab 2 packs and you're there with 7+ months worth of food. For 120, I would say thats good.

I'm sorry, but I live in Florida. :(
Re: Hypothetical question
Everyone seems to mention Expo's. When is the next reptile expo in Florida around the Tampa/Clearwater region?
