rex x standard het for rex =?

I love my rex rats but I'm tired of producing double-rexes because no one wants them. Currently my buck is a rex rat from a double-rex X standard breeding. And all my new females are standard furred. My question is if I hold back females for breeders from these litters (rex x standard) will I end up with more double rexes or just regular rexes when I breed my buck back to his daughters.
Did that make sense...? :P tired

Just make sure to choose smooth coat females. Rex is a co-dom, so breeding a rex to a rex will cause a 25% chance of double rex, 50% rex, and 25% standard coat. So, if you only hold back standard coat females, you won't ever hit a double rex.

Wouldn't that mean that it would be impossible to get double rexes in a double x standard breeding? I consistently got double-rex litters from 3 different standard females when bred to my double-rex bucks. I got a dumbo standard female recently who threw my first ever rexes (the entire litter was rex, no standards) which is where my new buck came from.

Yes, it wouldn't be possible to see a double rex from a rex x standard breeding. Your standard females may have been weak rexes. Rexes may lose the curl in their coat over time, and in my experience, I see this more frequently with females. They'll usually keep the curl in their whiskers, though, so take a closer look at those girls.

I'm getting double rexes from a double-rex x standard breeding. but that should still only throw reg rexes.

As far as the females in question go: Sleek shiny, straight whiskers, not a scruffy spot on them. I went over this before, last year, when I started throwing double-rexes. My females are just your standard black hooded petco rats. It's true that since they came from a big breeder I don't know there background but I do have one other female who's a rex and she's lost her curl as they tend to do, looks nothing like my 'normal' females. I've had rats for years and the breeders that were throwing doubles consistently were as standard furred as they come.

Maybe I've got a super strain of rex. :P lol.

Well I guess I'll cross my fingers and hope for the best. It's gonna be kind of a waste of time if I grow some females and end up with doubles when I breed them but hopefully genetics will hold true in this case.

My Double Rex X Dumbo Standard got me plenty of Double Rexes. I believe Double Rex is dominant. Rex is Co Dom.

How does that work? if it's the same gene?

Oh well I don't think I'll ever nail down rat genetics. I avoid high risk types and guess and check the rest of the time. :P

Rex: Rere (50% homo)
Double Rex: ReRe (100% homo)

Normal x Rex = Normal 50% Rex 50% (50% homo)

Normal x Double = ReRe 100% (homo)

Thanks. I sold my double-rex boys so I guess that means I won't have a double-rex problem anymore.

rere = standard
Rere= rex
ReRe = double rex

Rex (Rere) is co-dominant. Meaning when bred to a standard (rere) 50% of the litter with be Rex (Rere) and 50% will be standard (rere). When two Rex (Rere) rats are bred together they create a Double Rex (ReRe) rat. Double Rex (ReRe) is completely dominant. If the rat is bred to a standard (rere) the litter will be dominant with Double Rex (ReRe).
