Any news on S373?

Hey guys, Today was the day that the senate went into debate about the s373 bill correct? Does anyone have any news on it?

Today was the first day that they could have debated/voted on it. As far as I know, no action was taken.

It's possible they could dive into it tomorrow, or never. Or something in between. We just don't know.

So far, we've prepared for the worst, now we're just hoping for the best.

Ah okay. So it could take a long time for us to even get an answer if our letters have stopped s373. And does anyone know how many letters total were sent in?

I've only got rough estimates. Nothing for sure.

I'd rather wait a day or two before putting the number out there to try to get a more exact number. But I'll say this, I'm pretty damn happy with the result :)

Keep in mind, the last campaign had 21 targets for every person to write to (the committee members). This yielded approximately 50,000 letters. If you do some math (and a little assuming), the approximate number of people who wrote letters to each of the 21 committee members is 2,381 (50,000 divided by 21 = ~2,381) people in the community who opposed the legislation. You can do the math in reverse as well. 2,381 people wrote 21 letters each which yields 50,001 total letters (2,381 x 21 = 50,001).

This campaign only has 2 targets for every person to write to (each persons own Senators). So if the current campaign has the same participation rate, we should see roughly 10% of the number of letters we saw last time (2 targets divided by 21 targets = ~10%). 10% of 50,000 is 5,000 letters. So again, if we had the SAME participation rate as last time, we should see approximately 5,000 letters. Another way to look at it would be that the same 2,381 people wrote 2 letters each, that would be 4,762 (2,381 x 2).

I can tell you now, we have quite a bit more than 4,762 letters. So, the impact will definitely be there!

That is GOOD to know! I was concerned that due to the fact that each person could only write 2 letters this time as opposed to the 21 (I thought I remembered 22?) last time, it would make it very hard to collect enough letters to make an impact.

At least this time each individual letter should have a bigger impact, since the senators will know they came from their constituents, whereas for the most part, the committee members were receiving letters that were not from their own constituents.
