breeding

Im thinking about picking up a nice stripe male borneo and want to breed in the future. Is that stripe genetic or just a pattern that that one particular snake may have gotten. how does that work? man i have so many questions about the genetics of snakes and how all those morphs are made. any info would be nice, i know its a pretty wide open question, lol. thanks

I'd ask the breeder to find out if the stripe is genetic.

More than likely they'll have pictures of the parents and offspring and should be able to give you a good idea.

Genetic to a point, an inherited trait but not "fixed" like with corns or gophers..Stripes are commonplace for the species but you'll still produce animals which don't look striped..In time it "might" could be fixed with selective/in/linebreeding..But as of today, No, IMO..However there are bloodlines that are prone too or prominent of..

To piggyback off this topic...

There are striped Borneos and there are super striped Borneos. I'm guessing the super stripe is a trait all in its self? Meaning two normal stripes wont make a super stripe?

Dennnis IMO, super stripe is a breeders term to describe the striping, It being the center ivory stripe bordered by the pattern color as a stripe as well, thereby giving the animal something like 3 stripes..If the laterals are joined to form a solid pattern,its often stated to be patternless, which makes no sense to myself..I would think this to be of a striping nature as well..
And so I'd say yes 2 stripes can make the definition of a super stripe and so said super stripes can and will produce animals that won't be classified as such..Because these are NOT fixed traits or proven mutations if ya prefer..

What I got from this was kinda sorta, maybe, once in a blue moon, yes- but only if you do the magic dance during breeding, etc. etc. :gj:

Just kidding. This post was incredibly helpful and I appreciate it! I think my normal stripe actually came from a leapordXnormal stripe pairing, but leopards, stripes, and super stripes were also produced in the clutch.

Dennis, if ya look at the darkie I posted on the other site ya might notice it would qualify for the super stripe classification..There was another animal or 2 in the clutch that would as well..We produced several that could be considered super stripes..But none came from the breeder that the name originated with..We all are just now seeing what we can do with the species..
Seeing as we produced 105 briets ya know we saw a pretty great variance..
In time,we all will see some hot and unique stuff, its a matter of production and a keen eye on the breeders part..Then the human part will have a hayday with the naming game as has been seen with balls and boa constrictor..We have only 2 girls going in this year but wait till 2011, :D

It must be exciting to be on the breeding front of relatively unknown snake breed. Good luck with breeding, and I'll keep my eyes peeled for 2011. :gj:
