Red-Headed Beaked Snake

This little pudge has gone from 352 grams to 714 grams in 5 months:

A very intelligent and interactive snake. Despite being rear-fanged venomous, they are not inclined to bite and are very interested in watching you.

Before I got him on F/T, it was a little disturbing watching him dispatch rodents. He'd grab them about the middle and chew for about 30 seconds. He would then drop the prey and pull back.

The prey would feebly kick and keel over fairly rapidly. They have identified and isolated a neurotoxin in their venom (rufoxin) which appears to be pretty effective on rodents.

A pig too. Always begging for food.

LOL, I don't have the red-headed, I have the Rufous. He eat's very good also, I need to move him up a bit, because he was small when I got him, and he's still kind of small. I feed him 2 fuzzys per week, which he eats without hesitation. He grabs them, and starts to swallow them lol. He is always active, though, watching whats going on around him.

If you start to pet yours, or sit your hand still, does yours come to your hand and crawl up it to be held? I know mine does.

I now have three species of rhamphiophis - rufous, red-heads and acutus (in their third month of QT). All three species will come into your hand to be held. Very personable and intelligent animals.

They are TV watching snakes. You can literally hold one and sit on the couch for long periods of time - and they seem to almost enjoy it. They do this cool periscope things where they check out their surroundings with these little bird-like head bobbing movements.

I know, it's so awesome when they bob their head, or when they stand up really tall and just fork their head over. It's what made me fall in love lol.

Thanks. Yea, I really need to get him some size, so I can get him on like rat pups or something. I got him when he was small, and that was like 6-7 months ago, so i'm assuming I got him maybe after a month or 2 when he was born, not sure. I only paid $70 for him though, and it only took me 6 months to find him. I was almost going to get a Red Head instead, but I was trying to hold off from paying ExoticJungle or whatever it was like $150ish. Then when I was set to order, I ended up coming across this ad on KS for him. You have one of the nicest Red Head's that i've seen so far.

LOL, it's ok, I wasn't going to mention it. I wouldn't want him to track you down and swallow you whole or anythig.

Are you going to get a female Red Head & breed them?

I want to get a female Rufous and breed them, just so they are more common in the pet trade. That way other people may share our luckiness to have them. Excellent beginner snake, i've never known one to bite, or found any reports of them biting online. They are active during the day, they accept food readily. Some are a little shy at first, though they quickly outgrow that habbit. They also like to be handled, or seem to enjoy it. Then they are always aware of everything going on, and they are very interactive.

I have a female, but she was WC and is in the main house under QT for another 2 months.

I agree that they are a well-kept secret. They are so easy to keep, inexpensive and intelligent. Someday, the secret will be out and more people will get into them.

A lot of people are put off by the rear-fanged aspect.........
