Getting a hognose!

I fell in love with the Western Hognose when I first saw one, and then meeting Skiploder's baby (last weekend) made me realize I need one. :D So I found a beautiful little girl on Fauna, and already paid for her... unfortunately she can't be shipped yet, since the breeder lives in Minnesota where it's too cold now. The temperature in his city was -11 the other night, so it could be a long wait. :O But she is MINE, and I hope to get her soon!

What should I know before getting her? The breeder said she's feeding well on pinkies, and I will be housing her in a tub... will a 12qt be appropriate, or should I get a 6qt? And can she be in the same rack as corn snakes (after quarantine)? Any other advice would be appreciated, keeping in mind that my only experience thus far is with corns & BPs. I have a spare 6 qt you can pick up tomorrow. You can actually place it in a larger tub in the rack......I do that for my baby mussuranas. I'd get a pair of them in separate 6qt tubs in one 28 or a 32 qt drawer.

In a vertical rack, both the hot spot and ambient temperatures will vary by level. If you set the middle drawer to, let's say an 88 degree hot spot - the top drawer may hit 90 degrees and the bottom 84 or 85. It depends on whether the rack is resting on carpet, a wood floor, etc.

I've kept pythons and colubrids in the same rack. It takes some fiddling but it's doable.

There are several different schools of thought on what temps to keep westerns at. Some people provide some high hot spots, some people go without supplemental heat.

I keep my cool end around 75 to 77 and the hot spot at the back wall at 86 to 88. The overall ambient can get as high as 82.

I was at the EBV today and they had a sweet little western for $75.00......
