How Can You Stand Using Paper Towels?
I'm done with paper towels. I liked them in the beginning but now I cannot keep cleaning them up. My largest Ball python is eating medium F/T rats and when she goes to the bathroom all the papertowels get completely soaked. It's disgusting. Today and the last time she defecated I was literally about to throw up, and normally I don't get like that with snake crap. When I pick everything up, there are still puddles of pee in the tub. I have to scrub her water dish and hides because they smell fowl. I changed the substrate today over to aspen bedding for all of the Balls and it's holding the humdity a lot better and I feel much safer using this substrate since I rarely get temp spikes but I gt nervous about it so using loose substrate makes me feel a lot better. How can you stand using paper towels? Especially for adult and sub adult Ball pythons since they have larger craps and pee a lot more.

I only use paper towels in six quart tubs, and unprinted newspaper for anything larger. Works great for me and my crew!
Re: How Can You Stand Using Paper Towels?
personally, i don't use any substrate at all.
when there's a big poo, i pick up the "solids" with a cloth, shake the "solids" into the toilet, and put the dirty towels in what i like to call the "snake waste genie" which is essentially a container with a lid so i don't have to wash them immediately (cause it would be silly to do a load of laundry for 1 cloth).
then i wipe up the wet stuff with another cloth, rinse that, and also into the snake waste bin it goes. then i spray out the tub with 1 part vinegar 2 parts water to clean it and deodorize. about once a month they all get a total washdown in the shower.
works for me, is environmentally friendly, and doesn't waste money on paper towel.
yes, newspaper is pretty much free, and recyclable, but i don't think you're supposed to recycle it once there's poo all over it haha.
Re: How Can You Stand Using Paper Towels?
Maybe you aren't using enough paper towels? I use two layers per tub and I never have the problem of excess pee in the tub.
I like paper towels for precisely this reason. You can actually see how much waste the snake expells. With aspen, it just kind of gets lost and sits in there for a month. That is way more disgusting to me than cleaning out paper towels every week.
Re: How Can You Stand Using Paper Towels?
I like paper towels for the smaller critters.
Bigger animals I switch em over to the Kraft paper.
Re: How Can You Stand Using Paper Towels?
The reason you don't like paper towels is exactly the reason I love them. I immediately know there's stool, urate, urine, whatever and I can get it cleaned up. I think if you make yourself do this you'll get over the feeling that your about to hurl. I mean ya know, up to you but great way to keep a nice clean cage in my opinion and FARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR easier to clean that bedding. It's also Much much much cheaper
Re: How Can You Stand Using Paper Towels?
Paper towels rock for the little guys, but eventually, I switch them to aspen.
Re: How Can You Stand Using Paper Towels?
i use paper towels for new arrivals and babies. and i use more than one layer. Everyone else gets news paper, more than one layer (usually 2 are good for me, except for the boa, he gets a few more because he moves his around).
Re: How Can You Stand Using Paper Towels?
I only use paper towel's in the baby tubs. 6qt & 15qt tubs. Its best to be able to monitor if the babies are passing waste like normal. Once they graduate to a larger tub they get the fine shred aspen bedding. It's easier to just spot clean and replace soiled bedding, with a full replacement when needed. The paper towel thing is not permanant with me.

I love paper towel as its very sanitary to me and im a clean freak. Not to mention costs me $5 a month in paper towels for everyone.
