water monitor help

i have a water monitor thats 1.5 years old. she is the only one i have. on dec 19th i found one egg in her cage. could it be parthenogenesis. should i be worried that its been the one egg so far. any help would be nice. one more thing i got her one year ago

You can try and incubate it and see if it hatches. BG has done that with females that laid eggs even though they have never been with a male. None have hatched so far though. BG never saw veins either, but he figured why not try.


It is normal for them to do this though. Happens all the time with BG's girls.

thank u for the info. but what about her having the one egg. it looks like she could still have 2 or 3 more. i read something about a water monitor laying one egg then 8 days later the rest came. is that normal or does that mean she could have a problem.

She is probably going to lay some more. She should be fine, but you'll need to keep an eye on her. If she seems like she's trying to deliver an egg with no success, a Vet visit may be needed, but she'll probably just lay the rest and be fine.:gj:

How big is she?
Females will lay eggs all the time with no male present. The chances of the egg being viable are 1 in a million but always incubate. There is a slight chance she can become eggbound so keep a close eye on her. If her stomache turns light pink take her to the vet.
Also make sure you fedd her well. Egg laying takes alot out of her.

Keep an eye on her Ive heard of people loosing there females from becoming eggbound and that would be horrible. Big gunns when you gonna get a male and make some c.b.b. baby waters?

thank u for all your help. she laid 2 more eggs today. yes she is eating good. she is about 3.5 to 4 feet long tl, and she is not so nice. i've been working with and she is gaining my trust. still have a long way to go.

I would be a little bit concerned about her not digging a nest.Female monitors will often lay infertile eggs,the problem is if you do not provide a proper nesting site for them they will scatter the eggs,lay them in the water or worse retain them and become egg bound and die.What are you using for substrate?You need to provide a deep substrate of at least 2 feet deep,sand dirt mix would be best.You also need to make sure that is is warm enough,so she will want to make a nest.

sorry been busy. i hate too say this but i wasnt ready for my water to be a female. her cage is 8' long 4' wide 23" tall. i dont use a substrate. i do this for a super clean enviroment. i have had no problems with this. i went out monday to buy 160 pounds of top soil and sand. i put that in a rubber maid container. i opened up her enclosure and gave her full use of the room. she laid a total of 7 eggs. she is doing very good. i plan on making that room into her new enclosure but that will take some time. now think i should get a male and start breeding my own water monitors? well thats it for the nite and thank u everyone for all the help u gave me. this is a very good forum.
