    UTH Size
So I need to raise the temperature on my cool side but I want to try to avoid lights if possable. Right now in my 40 Gallon tank I am using

    http://www.amazon.com/Repti-Therm-Un...9740277&sr=8-2

This does not cover half of my tank.

Would it be ok to use

    http://www.amazon.com/Repti-Therm-Un...9740277&sr=8-6

That way it is larger and will help to heat the cool side more?

You could get the bigger one or you could just use two UTHs, either would be fine. Just to be clear, you need to use a reptile thermostat with these devices.

You are correct. The UTH you are currently using is too small and basically only heating the glass under the hide. If my memory serves me correct, most 40 gal tanks have a floor measurement of approximately 36"L X 18"W. Normally you will get the best results by using a UTH that covers about half of your floor space, give or take a little. Using the 8" X 18" will cover more of the length but still leave you with about 5 inches on either side. I would recommend going with an 11" X 17" UTH to start with and make sure you attach it lengthwise. Also, if you haven't already done so, insulating the tank should also help. And if it is a screen top, there are things you can do to help hold in the heat. If you need help with any of these things, just ask...

That's fine. Just make sure you control it somehow. If not with a thermostat, a rheo/dimmer switch. Those are great for belly heat but i'm no sure how much ambient temps you'll get with that in a 40. They might not leave the hides if your ambients are low. How are you controling your ambients ? I know you dont want to use a lamp but its hard to control in less you have your room temps at 80. Even R. Davis recomends a lamp with a display tank.

Decided to just go with a 2nd 30-40 UTH. So now I have half the tank heated and the other half not so I will see how this goes.
