Re: what is safe
What is it you are trying to seal? Are you looking for some kind of varnish?
Sorry for the question, french speaking here...
Anyway, In my opinion, a water based product will do the job better (I mean safer for the herp) than an oil based product (continuous toxic fumes emanation).
I did some researches about water based varnish vs oil based varnish for wood, and water based products are safer.
hope it helped

Re: what is safe
anything is safe given proper cure time, cure time depends on the product.

not exactly true when you add heat lights.
I use only water base sealants.

heat excellerates most cure times, but it doesn't cause it to start outgassing, if u add a heat lamp and it begins to smell again... you obviously didn't let it cure long enough.
i don't know why people would use oil based products tho. i guess sometimes their cheaper. but atleast with paints and coatings... water based lays down so much nicer, let alone all the other benefits.
but i really don't see how water based vs oil based coatings are safer for our animals. sure the outgassing isn't "as toxic" but its still toxic. don't rush things they can't be rushed and you'll be fine.
