Winter shipping of cresties?

My girlfriend :bubbles: says she wants to buy me a crestie to add to my collection for xmas!! :banana::banana::banana:

I was super excited and we started doing some online window shopping talking about what I'd like to do with breeding etc, but then I realized that "hey, it's winter, and come x-mas day Minnesota will be terribly, terribly cold".

I suppose solutions would be to find local midwestern breeders and make a drive, but that limits my selection greatly (especially since I don't know ANY midwestern breeders whatsoever).

Opinions? Suggestions? Anyone know of any breeders in the minnesota area (within 6 hours drive or so)?

most breeders will add a heat pack or something to keep the crestie safe during transporation.

Is that suitable for sub-20 degree temps??

It should be at least 40 degrees in both the shippers location and in your location in order to safely ship and a heatpack should definitely be used for temps that low. You can get away with 37-38 degree temps, but I would not go any lower than that for shipping. You can always purchase something and have it held until the weather is suitable for shipping. Most breeders do this in the winter and summer time in order to ensure safe shipping for their animals.

Shipping a crested in winter isnt that big of a deal.You just have to be patent! Sometimes it can take weeks or even a month but usually a few nice days come around where a seller can safely ship you your animal.When you have this scenario communication is key as well as a well insulated box:D
As for Minnesota breeders I can't think of any off the top of my head but I can think of about a half dozen that are from Wisconsin. What kind of crested are you looking for?

I'm completely undecided right now on what I'm looking for, because just about every possibility is on my wish list!

There are a LOT of great breeders in the Midwest. I got mine from a great guy and of course I cannot remember his name!

If you are willing to make the drive to Wheaton, IL there is a bimonthly show and they always have a ton of cresties.

It depends on the breeder. Some are more equipped to ship in cold weather than others. No breeder in their right of mind will send a crestie if they are not positive it will make the trip.

Have you considered Twin Cities Reptiles (on University Ave. in St. Paul)? I don't recall seeing any cresties there on my last visit but the place is enormous, so I probably overlooked them. They take very good care of their animals and have a very wide variety.

Yeah I hit up TCR often for feeders, and while they do often have cresties, they haven't had anything that "wowed" me, especially for the price.

This thread is pretty old, so if anyone cares we did in fact pick a gecko out. I'm getting a fantastic red patternless male to jumpstart my various color projects. Keep an eye out, I'm hoping to produce some fantastic and eye-glaringly bright yellows, oranges, and reds, and everything in between.
