I wish there could be a poll, but I'm still fig out this forum and how to do certain things. *lol*
Sorry, I fig out the poll thing now!
Re: Ambient Temp or 50/50?
I have to control the temps in their environment not mine. Unfortunately its pretty cold where i am and i keep my house temps at 74 in the winter. One day when i sell my condo and move to a house i'll have a snake specific room.
Til then i have to control their temps at the enclosure.
Re: Ambient Temp or 50/50?
I provide a gradient for most of my snakes; usually, all that's necessary is a head mat hooked up to a thermo/rheostat on one side. The exception is the ones that are in AP cages, which have flexwatt hooked up to a thermostat. I've had snakes burn and I've had snakes freeze. Unless you are certain beyond a doubt that you can maintain a specific temperature 24/7, a gradient is always the safest way to go.
Re: Ambient Temp or 50/50?
We do both. Keep the facility at 78F and provide warmer basking spots in all the cages. Disadvantages to high ambient temp are heating costs and it gets really uncomfortable in there in the summer. A huge advantage is that if electricity fails to one of the racks, the snakes don't get too cold waiting for us to notice.

I guess I should have been more clear the way I asked... but your answer makes sense. I keep my snake room at an ambient temp during cool down, and provide a hot spot after their brumation.

Ok, well... "cool down" is what I meant. For breeding purposes, right? They need a cool down period for about 3 mos if I've read the right stuff?

Cool Down yes but not needed to breed. Some do it some dont and have same success rate. I do not cool anything at all with a constant 80-82 cool and 93 all year.
Its up to you if you want to cool or not.

That's very interesting, thanks for the clarification!
But wait... what about boas such as B.c.i.'s and Dum's? I keep a pair of Dum's as well, but they're juvies right now.
Are you speaking just on BP's alone?
