Dumeril's Boa

Hi, I have had my two ball pythons for just over 5 months now, and have gotten so addicted that I am already looking forward to possibly getting another snake in a couple more months. One of the ones I had looked at was the Dumeril's boa, but I just had a couple questions.

First, if I got a male do you think he would stay small enough to handle on my own? Not super important, but all the same. I am about 6 foot, 215 pound male.

Second, are there any other boas/pythons that grow to about that size (6-10 feet, anywhere in there) with a pretty easy disposition? Thanks!

You shouldn't have a problem handling on your own. Even a female doesn't get to the point of not being manageable. They have a strong feeding response so you may want to use a hook getting it out. Once out, they are one of the tamest snakes you'll ever encounter. A Columbian boa (boa constrictor imperitor) would be another choice. I'd go with the Dumeril's though. They are great snakes and not everybody and their brother has one.

Boas rock. Never had a Dumerils but my BCIs are great. Personalities range from the queen of all that is evil (anery) to the king of chill (albino). But for the most part they're very handleable and males won't get too big usually provided you don't powerfeed them up to 8ft or something... I'd go to a reptile show and just walk around and see what they have there. DO NOT bring alot of money or a debit card though lol. Reptile shows have a habit of being in places with ATMs and its like being a kid in a candy shop.

I have 2 Dumeril's and love them both. Very docile and never even looked like they want to strike.

My adult female was a little huffy and kinds hissing when I first got her. But once I picked her up she was puppy dog tame. But after a few weeks she has lost the cage aggression and never hisses - just a little tensing and once you have her she's calm. She eats pretty good. But has gone off eating for a month or 2 here and there.

My year + old male is awesome. Never misses a meal. Never hissed or struck. I had him since he was about 16inches and he's now about 2.5ft. Such a little sweetie.

Both snakes are much more docile than my BP that can get cage aggressive and nips at me now and then - expecially during shed. But is a puppy in your hands.
