Who knew rat meat could be so expensive?
I've just switched my BP over to f/t and until I can find a cheap mini freezer, I will have to buy them one at a time from a pet store.

The pet store in my location (The Kennel Shop) sells Medium sized frozen rats for 7.30$ each - This is almost the same price as a live rat! My BP could be having high quality steak tips for that price

Does anyone happen to know if this is the standard going rate for a 120g frozen rat, or am I just being a cheapo?

Anyone have a suggestion for cheaper (price, not quality) frozen rats from a different chain? I've tried looking around Petco but I can't seem to find a freezer of any sort that may contain frozen food, there is also NEVER anyone able/willing to help me.

Out of respect for the people I live with, I cannot order from Rodentpro until I acquire a mini freezer.

Thus, I have to buy singles from a pet store until that happens.

Thanks though, I definitely do intend on doing business with rodentpro.

    AHHH.....

I'd find a new place to buy rats from, maybe even someone local that's on the board.

You could always buy live and euthanize and freeze minimal quantities if that'd fly.

Unless you buy in bulk or directly from someone who breeds them, you are going to have to pay higher prices.

Get that mini freezer soon! :)

Considering the way overpriced cost of buying single frozen rodents from most any chain pet store I think you'd be a lot farther ahead to purchase a used small cubic freezer. I bought one years ago, used but in new condition for $50.00 Check out your local craigslist and used appliance stores, even some Salvation Army stores carry used appliances.

I haven't ordered f/t rodents in a few years but I always preferred www.themousefactory.com Their customer service and quality product really impressed me back then.

The other option is to find out if there are any snake shows within reasonable driving distance. Most shows would normally have a f/t rodent dealer as a vendor there.

Check for a specialty store--not a chain. See if there are any reptile specialty stores, or exotics specialty stores, anywhere around. If there are, they will most likely have much cheaper live feeder rodents, and they may carry frozen for much less than a chain store.

If you can only find live, consider pre-killing them for your snakes rather than paying more for frozen. I realize that's not the easiest thing in the world to do, but 7 bucks for a rat is not a price I would ever want to pay, lol.

Thanks for the replies folks :)

I think it's in my best interest to try to get that mini freezer ASAP as a few of you suggested... There aren't any specialty stores around here that I'm aware of. The only pet store in my area that isn't a chain focuses on fish, they have even less reptile supplies than Petco.

I would buy frozen rats from a private seller in my area, but there just doesn't seem to be much of a reptile fan club in Maine. I often find that pet store employees treat me poorly after learning I'm shopping for a snake. I was once refused a specific rat because she refused to "sentence it to death" despite it's cage being labeled "feeder rats" :weirdface
