morph genetics

so I am taking a biology that dabbles quite a bit in genetics. and I was wondering if people keep pedigree's of their BP's? and if you would share them? I am not concerned with any specific morph I am just curious about well... all of them!

not saying people don't but when dealing with morphs theres no real reason to keep pedigrees. I mean when it comes to ball pythons, im buying an animal based on how it looks i really don't give a crap if the dad was a cool looking or ugly morph, im buying it because this animal is a cool looking morph. only time im intrested in the parents at all is when it comes to recessive morphs and thats if my animal is not a visual.

other snakes like gtps, etb, carpets, atb that have drastic color changes, in general your buying a neo and you have no idea what it will look like so all you have is to base it off, is the pedigree. I mean my carpet was a grey little worm and now hes bright yellow. gtps and etbs don't need explaining at all.

I've been seeing more and more posts and hearing more stories lately about people breeding two animals together that they were unaware were het for anything, and getting a visual recessive trait out of the clutch (usually albino I think, as albinos are the most common).

I do think pedigrees are helpful, especially as we get quad+ combos and the exact genetics start getting muddy (and for animals with a visual recessive parent in their distant background) ... Somehow I don't really see people keeping peds on their BPs, though.

For one thing, AFAIK nobody really does it yet, so we'd all have to start from scratch which, well ... Doesn't quite defeat the purpose, but isn't as useful as having a multi-generation pedigree.

For another, these animals tend to change hands multiple times throughout their lifetime -- it seems folks often don't even think to keep or send the "paperwork" with het animals a lot of the time; I could see a pedigree very easily getting lost by the snakes' third or fourth owner ...

yeah I mean we live in the age of computers so I mean all you would have to do is draw it up and just add to and print off multiple copies for multiple babies and mail them with them kinda like an invoice it seems to me that it would make things easier for breeders

Yes, I keep lineage records on all of my animals, and I've even entered them into iHerp's lineage database.

If I ever produce something 'new and secret', I would still make the lineage information public once the cat was out of the bag.

This is a VERY under-utilized area, in my opinion. Balls do undergo some pretty drastic color changes over the course of growing up, particularly some morphs such as pastels.

I do hope it does catch on!

I haven't seen iHerp's lineage database; I'll have to check that out ... :)

Degei also has this & I do keep track of my lines so I can offer unrelated animals to my buyers.
