thinking bout a pick up. please advise
i have found what i think is a really good deal on craigslist. im new to the whole morph idea and my backround in the geneology of snakes is far from par but ive been researching a bit and i think ive found a diamond in the rough here. please advise...
... anyways ive found a 2.5' long male het ghost for $75. its belongs to someone who comes off as a great snake keeper and from the pics ive seen he is in great shape. is it worth it? its also about an hour away but the drive doesnt defer me to much. I have a normal female very close to breeding size and im thinking this would be a great opportunity to get some ghosts. if i am completely mis informed with how this combo works please let me know. good deal or not?

Hypos (Ghosts) are a recessive morph. If you bred a het hypo to a normal you would get offspring that is 50% het for hypo. You will not get a visual hypo unless you breed two hets or a visual hypo to a het. Also when buying hets its important to trust who you are buying from. Its very easy to falsely represent normal animals as hets, which is why reputation is particularly important when buying a het.

o i forgot to include that i understand it would take a second breeding with one of the offspring to the daddy to produce a visible morph

also all necessary paperwork for the snake is included to prove that the snake is in fact a het ghost/hypo

ALSO... would there be any ways down the road to possibly pick out which babies carried the hypo gene? i understand there is only a 50% chance throughout the clutch for that to happen. thanks for the help

No your baby's will only have a 50/50 chance at being het for hypo..So your still not for sure to get hypos..

Please remember that each offspring has a 50% chance of carrying the Hypo gene. Then if it does carry the gene there is only a 25% chance of hitting the visible morph. This isn't to discourage you but to give you all the information.:gj:

Honestly if you're going to take the time out to raise those 50% hets you might as well just get a pair of hypo hets. Or buy a het hypo female and then add either a visual male or het male down the road when the female becomes breeding size.

and then if i did by chance pick a hypo out of the bunch and bred it with the daddy the resulting clutch would have a possibility of giving some visible ghosts? if i understand right my guess is 50%?

You would actually get 25% chance at a visual, 50% hets, and 25% normals.

ok so all my questions have been answered but one..... is this a good deal? i would have been fine with settling for another normal anyway but this seemed like the better option. of course im sure i could get something way better for the 100 i was hoping to spend at the next expo in 3 weeks.
