Can ingesting sick mice kill your snake?
I was visiting with some family and friends the other day and the subject of Ball Pythons came up. Some friends of friends that were there, said that they used to have two BP's but that they both died. They went on to say that they thought it was some how connected to the mice that they were feeding them. And the reason they felt this way was because both snakes died in the same week and, according to them, right after they ate. Also they said these were mice that they had been raising and that shortly after that all of the mice died.

I have never heard of this and was wondering if anyone has.

What do you think?????

    Sure, why not.

While there could be some overlooked cause, a mouse with the right sickness can kill bp that eat it. So that's why it's good to make sure the feeders are healthy.

Are you speaking from experience or are you just speculating? Because I myself could come to the conclusion that it is possible. BUT I have never heard of it happening.

I guess it is possible that the mice ingested a poison and during the process of digestion the poison go into the snakes systems. I'm sure there are illness that can kill both mice and snakes. And ingesting them hopefully is the way it is passed on. But if All these animals died I would be taking some of them for a necropsy to make sure it wasn't gonna affect me and my family.

Wouldn't a poison kill the mice before the snakes instead of after as the friend said? Not speaking from experience here just the logic of warm blooded animals generally digest faster than cold blooded ones.

There are all sorts of conclusions we can come to. To be honest I did not question them about there husbandry. So it is very possible that it was something other then sick mice that killed their snakes. What I am interested in knowing is... If anyone has ever personally had their snakes die from ingesting sick mice? Or heard of it happening to someone else???

Makes sense to me. But I couldn't say with any certainty.

Yeah, true but with out knowing what exactly killed them maybe it was a poison that was more toxic to the snake then the mice. I still would have had them into the vet ASAP.

It could have been an environmental factor that killed them all. I would get them checked out by a vet. Could be something in the water that killed all of them and could be poisoning the people slowly too. Many people don't drink their tap water but they do cook with it, shower in it.

It sounds like this event happened awhile ago so, probably to late to go to a vet but maybe the water does have a high lead count or something, advise getting the water tested.
