    New striped corn. Need help...
Hi. I got this little girl from some people that are moving across the country. I thought she was a striped normal, but she has no checker pattern on her belly. It's completely white. And her head is lighter than the rest of her body. Could she be a blood red? I know the picture isn't very good, but you can get the idea.

I've got her in a 41 qt tub right now, so it's completely filled with hides and plants.

Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Striped from what I know have a clear belly but from the looks of that little one it is a motley.

That looks like a Hypo Stripe-motley. They are allelic (think mojave/lesser/het russo, etc) so you would get BOTH genes expressing.

From my experience, the *Q-tipping* is pretty standard for a motley-stripe. Vanishing stripes have none of the *Q-Tipping*.

Doesn't really look like a bloodred. Would be hard to tell without breeding it though!

Motley is dominant to stripe though. So you can have perfectly patterned motleys with perfect circles that are het stripe, and you can have phenotypically motley-stripe that are homo motley.

There's a lot of confusion in the terminology because of this. Some take motley-stripe to be a phenotypic description and not a genotypic one.

So for the OP its definitely not homo stripe. It's phenotypically motley-stripe, but may not necessarily be het stripe, only breeding trials or genetic make up of the parents could determine that.

And I don't think its a bloodred, motley/stripe bloods are still very rare.

Consensus: Motley is involved. Heavily. Not bloodred. Stripe? MAYBE. but it is definately an example of mX :) X being either motley or stripe.

That better? Make more sense? :)

*hugs her corn snakes* Goodness I love cornsnake genetics!

So it would probably be best to breed her to a stripe and a motley when she gets big enough? Geez! It'd be great if she turned out to be a male. It'd take less time to figure out what she's got going. Well, I guess time will tell. lol

My vote would be a stripe to breed it to... if you get undeniably stripes out of it, then this one is a motleystripe. If you get all kiddos with q-tipping and other motley characteristics, then it's a homozygous motley.

    Clear as mud? :)

Actually, the least confusing way would be to label this one motley het stripe if when bred to a striped animals, stripes show up.

So yes, if you want to test whether it is het stripe, breed her to a stripe or het stripe animal. If you get any stripes, then you know she's het stripe. If not, then she is homo motley.

Thanks everybody! I guess we'll find out in a few years what she's got in her.

See, I have always hated the motley het stripe nomenclature. Implies homozygous motley and het for stripe, in my head.

    Good luck!
