best way to......?

what is the best way to pre kill a rat. we are scared that a rat will bite our bp. so what is the most humane way to pre kill a rat

just hold the rat by the tail and thump its head as hard as you can... instant death usually :)... or you can gas them :P whatever floats your boat!
