Moving 4 snakes
Me and my girlfriend are planning a move from New Jersey to North Carolina. We are getting a much larger house. This new house will allow me to have a "snake Room" a room that i can have total controll of the tempature and humidity so that i can get rid of these heat lamps and only use UTH's
But my question is, what is the best method of transporting them on this 10 hour car ride. I was thinking that i could get Bins that fit them snuggly and put them inside the car that we are driving(moving company is taking the rest of my furniture..etc etc.
IS this a good idea? WIll the snakes be fine? Do i need to go buy some of those emergency heat pads to keep them somewhat warm on the trip?
Im dealing with
2 ball pythons
1 RTB
1 Burmese python

Re: Moving 4 snakes
I think the temps aren't too bad this time of the year up there...I moved my collection from North Florida to South Fl, around 6 hour car ride, I just put them in bags and put them all together in a tub in my back seat, not in direct contact with the sun or the AC...everyone was great afterwards.

Re: Moving 4 snakes
I would just bag them seperately or place them in seperate pillow cases, Then put them all in a steralite container , They should be fine. If so happens its a cool day just tape a heat pack underneath the steralite lid.By the way what part of NC are you moving to?

Sorry it took me so long to respond, work is crazy right now... IM moving back to High Point. Its near, Winston Salem, and greensboro. Right in the middle of those 2 towns
It will be cold when we move, i think we will be making the move in feb. its very common for temps to be in the 20-25degree range. Im not concerned with the car ride there because i will provide them with heating pads. But i will be stopping at a hotel most likley(i hate driving long periods in a car). Thats the only thing that is concering me.
My plan is to buy a space heater and put the snakes in the hotel bath room in tubs and turn the heat up to 80-85 degrees. I think that would be fine. I know they are going to be stressed but im trying to keep it down to a min

Re: Moving 4 snakes
When I have had to move snakes in that temp, I have gotten a nice deep bin and layered it like so; Towel/heat pack/towel/snake(s) in bag(s) with thermometer/ towel. This has maintained a temp of 84 in mid winter in MA.

Oh yeah, just drive straight through. It can't be that long. I have made it from Cape Cod MA to Port St Lucy FL in aprox 24 hr so NJ to NC can't be that long.

Re: Moving 4 snakes
I did my move from North Carolina to Arizona during the Summer months and this is how:
1. I made 4 "shipping boxes" out of 1/2" plywood and placed rope handles on the side for ease on the lifting and moving. I installed cheap battery operated digital thermostats (gardening section at Wal-Mart) in each box.
2. Bagged each snake separetly and distributed them the best I could within the 4 boxes to avoid overcrowding during the 3-day drive.
3. I purchased "Rubbermaid Blue Ice" reusable packages to place inside the boxes to avoid overheating, I re-frozed them every night in the hotels that we stopped for resting.
4. I installed a power inverter in my SUV rated to 1000 watts, and pre-fab flex watt for each box just in case my A/C got too cold in the back of the cab.... It never did. I did set them up in the hotel to keep temps within range.
I will say that it was not fun, I tried planning for contingencies and luckily nothing happen. I did my move in 3 days, in two vehicles with 36 snakes, 1 dog, 3 cats, 4 bins full of rats and oh yeah a wife and 3 kids.... and I must say it was pretty uneventful, the hardest part was off-loading and re-lolading everyone during our stops.
Good luck with your move, my guess is that if you can ship a snake overnight from the east to the west or vice-versa then you could very easily move yours inside a nice styrofoam lined cardoard box within the climate controled environment of your vehicle. Just take precautions and have some heat or cool packs available just in case.

Re: Moving 4 snakes
I'm moving from Denver CO to Puyallup WA on Friday, and here are my snake transport plans:
I have 8 snakes. Each will be in their own pillowcase. I have 2 tubs, each divided into 4 sections - 4 BPs in one tub and 4 corns in the other- with foam padding.
The trip takes about 2-2 1/2 days, so we will be stopping at motels. For the night, the snakes will be placed in their holding tubs (sm rubbermaids) with water and the tubs placed on small UTHs run by a thermostat.
That's the plan...I only hope it works. :) I will have small heat packs ready in case it gets cold going through the mountains, but the tubs will be in the truck cab with me, my BF, and my ex who is driving so it should be warm enough. We'll also have my BTS in his cat carrier up there. :D Cozy.
