Dialin in the temps (New setup w/ Herpstat ND)

After doing some tank research, I made some changes to my setup. I used to have the digital thermometer wire just running along the top of the substrate with the probe running under and into the warm hide. With that setup the temps were reading 90-94.

I made the change of running the wire under the substrate (taped down with black electrical tape) running over to the warm hide and buried under the substrate all the way to the warm hide.

I have a UTH under the warm hide. my problem is not the temps on the thermometer read about 98-105. I have the UTH on a rheostat, and these are the results i get on the lowest setting.

I just ordered a Herpstat ND. Im wondering should i place the probe for the herpstat under or ontop of the substrate? Will there be that much of a difference in temp?

Also, could the temp difference be due to the entire wire and probe being heated by the UTH, or due to a cheap thermometer?

Nothing else in my setup has changed, so Im pretty sure the temps are the same. Yes i could invest in a temp gun, but im a little tight on funds and the herpstat seemed like a more sensible purchase.

you should use hot glue instead of tape oh and the herstat should fix ur problem

Firstly I would remove the tape. Trust me it is an accident waiting to happen.

In the first position it sounds like the thermometer probe was on top of the substrate and now it is below it - that could account for the differences in temperature easily enough I think.

When you get the thermostat (good choice by the way :gj: ) then put the probe between the UTH and the outside bottom of the tank/ tub.

This stops the snake dislodging or affecting it and causing the unit to overheat the tank as a result.

When you get the thermostat and have the ability to control the temps better try and get it so that the temp under the substrate inside the warm end hide does not go above 95f and then adjust the depth or type of substrate until it reads 92-94f on the top of the substrate inside the hide.

This gaurantees the snake can never come into contact with dangerous temperatures no matter what it does. :)

I generally like to move the probe around while setting up the tank so only hot glue it down once I have it all dialed in and use it just to check things aren't drifting off the desired temps.

I'm using aspen bedding. Is it typical for that substrate 'absorb' that much heat? I'd say i have about an inch down.
