Rat Pricing, would you pay this?

1.50 for a small rat? In the 40 to 80 gram range.

2.50 for a medium in the 81 to 180 gram range?

3.50 for a large in the 181 to 275 gram range?

If not, what would you pay for rats of that weight, packed clean, as poop and urine free as possible, to the point that you could tell someone was making an effort to freeze them when they were clean and, most important, how many do you use and how often?

Live or frozen, same price.

I know they can be found cheaper, lots cheaper, but it seems that the cheap ones have some quality issues which I am hoping to eliminate. To do this requires a bit more work, hence a bit more cost, but a LOT more quality.

I am wondering if there are enough folks out there spending enough to make this worth while.

If you spent 100.00 dollars and shipping was 50.00 but you get 25.00 off making your shipping 25.00, does that make a small purchase worth while for you?

If you're purchasing several months worth of food, 200.00 or more, the discount may well cover shipping, maybe even being overnighted.

Does this provide enough incentive?

Or, should I just charge 1.00 for smalls, 2.00 for meds. and 3.00 for large with no discounts on larger purchases.

I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for and I would much rather spend a higher amount of money knowing that I am getting a higher quality food source for my animals as opposed to getting rats that are not clean or anything when they are bagged and frozen.

Just as an example (not sure what others are paying) I buy about 3 or 4months worth at a time. The last time I bought mice, I payed $113 for 250 small mice. Currently paying about .70 each for weaned rats, .95 for small rats.

i do not buy frozen but from what i have heard from people that buy from a lot of the big rodent breeders, i'd pay the extra for nicely packaged clean rats.

If your talking live that would be a fair price, maybe a tad high. Then again it depends on where you live.

where i get my feeders its .80 small 1.25 med 1.35 large and they are nothing but high quality individually vacuum packed clean never found anything to complain about.

Sign me up, Wes. We just got a very funky order in, and I'm done. I'd much rather pay a bit more and get healthy CLEAN rodents that aren't contorted into rat balls. Ew.

Oops...forgot to say, we go through about 80 a month, from adult mice all the way up to medium rats.

If you sold 100 smalls at 1$ each I'd take ya up on that :D I'm paying 2$ ech now...but I live in BFE

Those are very fair prices, if you have extreme surplus, you could have a sale...with discounts....You know I'd jump :gj:....I'd adjust prices based on you supply and demand.

I'm still gearing up and making plans. If all goes will I'll be producing a goodly number by the first of the year.

This learn as you go thing is eye opening.

Did you know that to have just 25 med rats, say 8 weeks old, and to have them every week, you have to have TWO HUNDRED in the in the chute?

Now, multiply that by the number of 25 rats a week sales you have and the number of rats you have to have on hand is astounding.

I'm taking this a tad slower than I originally anticipated. To do it properly and not be a flash in the pan is quite a bit of work.

I say those are fair prices. I buy my live and frozen mice/asfs/rats from a local guy, and I pay $1 for any size, any kind, frozen or live. Nobody else can offer deals that good, and if I didn't have a provider already I would pay those prices and more for quality rats. When it comes to maintaining an expensive collection, only the best can and will do. Good luck on your venture though. Im breeding ASFs now not to sell but to downsize the cost of feeders, and as easy as it is I can not imagine breeding to sell...that just seems like a grueling task.
