Humidity Question

On the cool side of the tank, I have a "den" type of enclosure with sphagnum moss in it.

The thermometer/hygrometer for that side of the tank is in the back of the den on top of the moss. It's currently reading 76 degrees F and 80% humidity while the he ambient humidity is very low (high 20s low 30s).

I know that the humidity should be 50-60%. Is what I have (high in the den, low in the rest of the tank) ok, or is the humidity in the den too high?

this is what I did when i kept my ball python in a tank. However you need to make sure he is using it especially when he when he's about to shed, if he isn't try putting it on the warm side. Also spray down the enclosure at least twice a day when he is going into shed and in the his blue phase this will help bump up the hole enclosures humidity. I found that when i didn't have the humidity box and didn't spray the enclosure the snake would get sheds stuck on and his eye caps wouldn't come off which can lead to your snake to eating because he can't see (fyi this was wwhen i didn't know much about bps and that was my first one) Since then I have switched to a rack and don't have humidity issues anymore. hope this helps good luck

i tried the humidity box with moss in it but it dried up so quickly and i had difficulty maintaining ambient humidity so we suffered through a bad shed. solution was to put a damp towel over part of the enclosure now i can maintain a perfect 50-60% and when i desire more i just wring it out less and i can reach 70 no prob

What kind of substrate are you using?

My BP just had its first shed since owning him for 2 weeks. At first he started off with horrible shedding because my humidity was low. I use cypress mulch substrate and at the time it was super dry. Instead of spraying down the top, i poured a good amount of warm water all around the substrate. Also laid 2 damp hot towels on top of the tank lid and humidity shot up quick! Within a few hours i checked on him and i see inside his hide, FULL COMPLETE sheds.

A damp towel over the lid is a great way to up humidity with little effort/need to constantly service it.

I use cypress mulch also. Putting a towel over the top helps, but since I don't want to set it on fire with the heat lamp, some of the cage is uncovered and humidity only stays high for a couple minutes.

try wetting it a little more and cover it with a few layers of foil
