    Charles the bci
I haven't been around here much in a while but was given what I believe is a bci when a friend couldn't keep it. This is the only good picture I have so far and his eyes had just gone clear getting ready to shed. I'll have to get better pictures soon now that he's done shedding. We've named him Charles.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...2935e457df.jpg

Hey, nice to see you around here again- & that's a beautiful boa, even in shed! :sweeet: What other snakes do you have now, if any?

I still have Sunny (banana BP) and Poppy (albino, black pastel) but that's it for now. I've hatched lots of wild eggs the past few years but I haven't kept any of the snakes. I have the bci in the cage I received him in but I bought a used AP T8 and have a new RHP on the way so I think that's enough money spent for now lol

Three's a good number. I didn't think this boa was your only snake, but asked to be sure.

Decided to weigh him today, he's 760g. I have no idea how old he is but I'm guessing a year-ish maybe older. While I had him out I got a few more pictures. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d997518d43.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...97cc6460b6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e25f7ad10b.jpg

They do... and he makes sure to use his eyes any time I reach near him. He watches VERY closely... I know I'm gonna get bit lol. I haven't handled him much but I feel like he's much smarter than my BPs

Hey, it's not inevitable. In all the many years I had her, I never got even one bite from the BCI I took on many years back- & she was a very bitey yearling that bit "everyone" & kept getting handed off to the next sucker that wanted a "free" snake for the first year of her life. Her last owner before me was a vet tech that kept snakes, & even he gave up. She came to me because my snake-vet's wife called me & talked me into taking her. By the time I got her, she was terrified & willing to demonstrate just how much she hated people, ha. :snake2:

Just take it slow so he has time to learn to feel safe with you. He's in a new place with a new human- right now, he's bound to be scared & defensive. Gentle handling is how you show a snake they're safe with you, nothing to fear. Be patient- it pays off handsomely when they're much bigger & they hurt a lot more. :D BPs tend to be very complacent, whereas boas are ready to "deal" with us if they feel the need. Don't make him feel the need. If I could get thru to that one I had, you can too. ;)

Basically, I'd put a small towel over my BCI & keep her inside that for a while (30 minutes or so at a time)- like on my lap- without letting her peek out. Few snakes will bite thru towels, & in the meantime, she learned to feel safe & warm- she learned my touch & my scent. After some weeks of hissy-fits under the towel, when she finally calmed down, I gradually allowed her peek out. Remember our size scares them too- we're a big predator, as far as they know. But by then, she was no longer in panic about me- she had learned I meant no harm.

Try this- & be patient. It's so rewarding when you can take a snake like this & really turn them around to be a mellow pet. They do learn & in my experience, do remember. There are exceptions of course, but not so many. (And every species has it's share of 'unreachably hostile' ones- humans included.)
