Pied x pied

I was at the local reptile store today and 2 people told me that breeding two visual pieds together results in a lot of failure to thrive hatchlings. I have know reason to doubt them, but I do always try to verify things I’m told. I couldn’t find anything about this. Does anyone here have any insight?

There is a difference between failure to thrive and non-eaters. I think they probably meant non-eaters--and as such they needed to be assist/force fed to be kept alive initially. Some people don't have the nerve to assist/force feed and can suffer huge losses... I usually find non-eaters to group up in certain clutches--I'm sure there is a genetic element, but, it seems unrelated to a particular morph. :)

It was just strange. When I said I was going to pair my 2 albino pied, two people that didn’t know each other said that pied with pied were known to have issues with getting hatchlings to stay alive. And that I should use 1 het pied

Unless you are crossing two different types of Albino together (Standard, Lavender)--there should be no issue breeding Pied x Pied. It is done regularly. :)

The only concern I would have is how closely related your two Albino Pied are to each other. Ball pythons can tolerate a large amount of inbreeding, however, a lot of breeders start with only a few snakes and will continuously focus on one target until they reach the morph they desire---this can really narrow down the gene pool and has the distinct possibility to lower viability through the generations.

That’s totally ridiculous. It’s like saying breeding a blonde (recessive gene) human to a blonde human will cause problems. You know what it WILL cause? Blonde kids. Lol

Just like pied x pied will make little pied snakes,,
