Bredli on the way, need help with set up!

After all that I have read I am suddenly not sure of what I need. My male Bredli is from 2015 and will arrive in 4 days. I am told it is a couple feet long.

What type of starter enclosure is sufficient? I am looking to build a larger enclosure for the long-term (i.e. 4x2x3) but obviously need something ready for when he arrives and for the transition time until the adult enclosure is made.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

My Bredli was about that size when I got her, started her in an 18"x18"x24" tall Exo-Terra, fairly quickly moved her to one with an 18" x 24" footprint. I started my JCP who was that size in a 24" x 24" x 16"-ish enclosure.

Currently my Bredli is in a 24" x 48" x 24", and my JCP, who seems to be more arboreal, is in a 36" tall.

Thank you for the details. I had already found an exo terra 36 x 18 x 24 on craigslist and was wondering if it was too big.

How did you heat yours?

No, I don't think that would be too big. We use a heat lamp with a ceramic heat emitter on a thermostat to heat our Bredli's enclosure. Since they do not need humidity you are good with an open top and aspen.

Currently, my kids have two 6 month old ball pythons that are still comfortable in their 10 gallon starter tanks with zoomed UTH. I knew the Bredl would have a few different requirements/needs, first and foremost, because it's already older and its growth will continue to outpace them.

Yes, they are totally different. The balls need about 60% humidity. In comparison my young Bredli just had a perfect shed at 15%. Also, we do not use under tank heating for any of our reptiles except the leopard geckos. The carpets, ball pythons, red tail boas, and Amazon tree boa all have pro products radiant heat panels. And the colubrids and my Bredli have the heat lamps for now.

I appreciate your help. I've had to learn a lot since I started as a complete neophyte 6 months ago when my 8 year old daughter asked for a snake for her birthday. Then my son wanted one too which I happily obliged.


Now we are all in but it is still a learning process for me. I have looked at better setups for the Bps and of course I'm trying to get something slightly better for the time being for the Bredli.

I understand completely. It wasn't long ago that my girlfriend and I started in the hobby. The Bredli will be a completely different snake than the ball pythons. It will be very curious and active while out, and will get much larger. Personally, carpet pythons are my favorite. Bredli's are certainly the easiest to care for in my opinion, however, all carpets are fairly simple until you get to the pure diamonds. Which one day I hope to find.

I totally agree. I have read so much over the past 6 months and viewed so many videos regarding snakes that after looking at the possibility of different bp morphs I realized a carpet python is what I wanted for myself. I could make a good case for having any of them but I continued to come back to Bredli over time for a number of reasons. I spoke to Nick Mutton this week and I was convinced in my thinking so here we go!

But, yes, diamonds are gorgeous and I was first attracted by jungles and jags and caramels and zebras, etc... I slowly started leaning back towards a normal or wild type carpet python that I thought would be impressive and would fit our family best.

Fyi, by looking at your list you've done a great job in selecting!

My Bredli has always had an RHP, and my JCP also has an RHP. They seem to both be doing fine with them.
