tell me if you think this is right
I work at a grocery store in the meat department. Wednesday is the slowest day of the week for us. Basically NOTHING to do. So, I decided to help the relatively new guy in grocery because he had ALOT to do. I was helping him work a skid and then the produce manager comes out of no where and starts yelling at me because I'm not in my department. I calmly and politely told him I've been checking that everything is ship shape in my department every 15-20 minutes or so. He doesn't believe me and threatens to check the security cameras. I once again calmly and politely told him that was fine because I was telling the truth. He was just so mad he made me do his work which was unloading 20 skids off of a truck. Is that right?

well i can say i kind of agree with him you have your department and the new guy has his and there for you should be worring about your department and makeing sure it is up to par per say. i run a department with 15 people in it and every now and then this lady from another area comes over and talks to my people and i have to tell her there is a time for that and it's called break time.

I've been working there long enough to run the department efficiently and "up to par", and I said theres nothing to do. If I stood around doing nothing I'd get in even more trouble, theres no winning with this guy, please tell me what I should have done instead, it sounds like I'm all wrong and got exactly what I deserved.

there is no winning in a situation like this. I have had that happen on several occasions and all i can say is lifes a b***h and then you die. (But no i dont thinks its right.) My logic is if you had nothing to do why not help out somewhere else. I would think the company would be happier if you were working rather than standing ther and getting paid for nothing. oh well.

I tell my crew, if you are out of work, polish your work area down. If that's done do it again better. Everytime they go off to another dept., it's usually to bull****. There are times someone from another dept. NEEDS help, then that's okay.

Don't tell him to "stick his job"! There's 20 people waiting for that job, and less jobs out there for you to find. That's the way of the world right now, a good job is hard to find.

Look the fact is some days bosses are idiots but then so are employees. Instead of being upset over this, why not go to this person when everyone is cooled down and ask what the proper procedure or expectation is for helping another department? Everyone these days is so touchy, where'd communication skills go?

The only right answer when your boss goes nutty on you is
"I'm sorry, it won't happen again."
you might also add in this case
"I should have asked you if it was OK for me to come help this guy. I will remember to do that next time."

arguing with an unreasonable boss is never going to help the situation. That's just one of the sucky things about being an adult...pick your battles - and this ain't one you pick :)
