That's 15% so no it's not too big. Some snakes can be picky about "thinking" prey is too big for them though so its up to the snake.

I personally feed sub adults 10-15% so yes it is fine, just visually check to make sure the rat is not bigger around than the snake is. I have every now and again get short rotund rats they seem at 15% a fair bit larger around than the snake is.

Alice, the wandering Pastel weighs over 1500 grams and is "intimidated" by large rat pups.

He has eaten two of them since returning from his 3 week slitherabout but normally he prefers a large, fat mouse.

OTOH, 800 gram Kelly will scarf down two rat pups with gusto and still ask for more.

My 'rescue' Peggy was being fed mice and weighed less than 1000 grams when I got her and she slammed medium rats like a maniac.

She's gained around 400 grams since then and will eat small/medium rats which 'look too big for her' with terrifying speed and efficiency.

Norma weighs 1500 grams but won't eat anything larger than a small rat and never eats more than one at a time, even though she could eat much larger food.

They can be really weird about their grub.

Haven't you ever noticed that "rotund rats" seem to get really compressed by the time it's all over?

For example, Dixie the Dumerils is "round" and eats huge jumbo rats.
When they're gone, I can't even find the 'bump' on her.
    She's like a trash compactor.

    LOL

I think people often forget that these snakes are not all created equal but are very much individuals.
It really all comes down to the snake itself, above all it knows when it wants to eat or not, or if husbandry isnt quite right etc.
You just gotta read the snake.

    Yup.

No two of mine eat exactly the same way.

That makes feeding night weird...gotta remember who likes zombie dances, who wants it laid gently down and waits until I walk away, who wants it really warm, somewhat warm, doesn't care, etc etc etc.

    :D

Though I tend to stay closer to the 10% end of the 10-15% scale, I'm sure a 600 gram BP can knock down 90 grams of rat with no problem.
