    Snakes we found while biking...

    Hi

The family and I were out for a ride on our mountain bikes in the Whitwater River Valley in SE MN. My wife spotted these two snakes on the trail after we almost ran them over. It was pretty crazy that these are the only snakes we saw on the entire 6 mile roundtrip, and they were about three feet apart!

Here's a couple of the fox snake (I like how he is trying to puff himself up and look tough!)

And here is my daughter holding a redbelly. I know, it's not a very good pic of the snake, but I just like to show off how much my six year old loves snakes!

    Later,

    George

I think your foxsnake there is a hognose.

Hogs have one of the best threat displays out there. They also play dead which is hilarious to see.

Imagine this snake, actually laying on its back, tongue in the diry, mouth wide open, playing dead for all its worth, but unable to hold its breath for more than a few seconds.

Yup, every 10 seconds or so you'll see a gigantic exhale and an equally enormous inhalation, the total cessation of movement. Until the next breath.

One of the funniest things I've ever seen. They are SO determined to make you think they're dead.
I may not be very smart, but what if I am?
