Question What Type of Aspen is Best?

Seems like aspen is the most highly recommended substrate here. There seems to be a lot of different brands of aspen, though. Is there any particular one that is better than others when it comes to dust, humidity, etc?

I see that Petco has an offer of buying an 8qt bag of Zoo Med Aspen Snake Bedding and getting a 4qt bag free.

The walmart here sells it, and it's only like $3 a bag. All my snakes are on paper towels though. I had trouble with one trying to eat it with her food. Others wanted to climb underneath of it. It's easier to regulate my temps with paper towels. I can keep it at 95 right against the glass, and it goes through the paper towels easy.

I couldn't raise it enough under the aspen, without it being hot to the touch. Paper towels is also much, much easier to clean. It also brings out their colors more being on white.

Personally Patricia for just the one snake I'd suggest the WalMart brand. The bag though it looks small is very, very hard packed so it expands to quite a lot of aspen. It's a nice fine shred aspen and very cost effective for the single or smaller collection owner. You might want to also check into your local TSC or other farm supply type stores. They often sell quality beddings at good prices though they tend to come in huge bags.

Re: What Type of Aspen is Best?

i used the shredded aspen but with 21 snakes and only doing teh tubs (18 ) it took 3 of the largest bags I could get and cost way too much I liked it the best but it just too high . I been getting some that from kaytee(spelling?) that like 23 bucks for a large dbrown bage it like 3.0 cubid ft it great and it just like pine shavings in cut. I been trying this tractor supply version it more of a chipped sytle and it a little cheaper but has more dust .
I also use paper towls but i have a problem with my guys/girls moveing the bowl all over and wadding u pthe papertowls . or the go in one corner and the entire tub needs to be scrubbed cause it all wet and the snake not got a dry area to lay.

I purchased a "press-pak" from Reptile Supply for $2.99, I was purchasing other supplements for my bearded dragons at the time, otherwise I would have bought a huge bag from my job for $8.00.
