What kind of wood do you use to build a rack?
I was at home depot today and all the wood i could find was pine. Can this be used? The guy also told me that all the wood has formaldehyde in it. Is it still okay to use? Thanks Jeff

Re: What kind of wood do you use to build a rack?
Hi,
I think you would need to seal it anyway to prevent the moisture causing damage/ problems.
I am not certain that would solve the formaldyhide (sp?) problem but it is bound to help I would have thought.

Re: What kind of wood do you use to build a rack?
Well, I know that pine and cedar are both no-no's as far as bedding goes. As for as a rack material, why not use melamine? Home depo carries it, and it is what most of the people on here use to build racks out of. They can even order it in back. If you asked someone at the store and they said they don't have it...don't be surprised. Apparently a lot of people have a problem with HD employees saying they don't have/carry it, when it is right there.
However, if you want to go the pine way, you should, as dr del said, seal it, very very very well. You can buy contact vinyl for the underside of each shelf so that the bp's come into contact with that, instead of coated pine. Contact is real cheap, and I would definitely use it because I am paranoid.
Hope that helps!

Re: What kind of wood do you use to build a rack?
I've always used melamine, people only seem to complain about it being heavy, well compared to other woods... yea, its heavy because its dense, which means it holds heat well and isn't that what we want? also i like the fact you can buy some iron-on edging for it and make it look like a professional job with ease.
personally i wouldn't bother with pine or cedar, like said b4 you have to seal it and melamine comes already to go :-)
