    BP Fascinated by New Acu-Rite

Today we attached the new Acu-Rite in the cool corner, about 2" below the top of the tank. BP seems fascinated by it, and has been propping itself on top looking at the screen cover.

I held it in the sunshine for about an hour this afternoon while hubby got the probe just right in the substrate. After putting it back into the tank, instead of going back into its hide, BP has been roaming around, checking out the screen cover, climbing on top of its hide but moreso that Acu-Rite. Frankly, it looks like it's looking at the Acu-Rite... perhaps checking the numbers, LOL!

This has been going on for over 2 hours, though. It looks like it's trying to escape, unless it's just roaming around looking for its next meal. It ate 3 days ago, though, but it's thin. Actually, this is the first time it's really been out of its hide since eating, so perhaps it's just natural exploring? I hope it's not stressed.

I can't tell if it merely wants to escape, or if it enjoyed being out in the sunshine so much that it wants to go back. It just really loves that Acu-Rite, though, as if it were a new toy.

I'm guessing he's exploring the new "potential prey" in his enclosure haha.
Tomorrow you'll find he dismantled the electronics to short and melt a hole in the top to escape.

Well BP's may not do higher math but they sure aren't stupid LOL. It's a new thing in his (or her) enclosure so it needs checked out to see if it's something to eat or something that will eat the snake. Since it's neither it will quickly be relegated to "ignore this, it means nothing to me" status.

I don't remember if you've mentioned it before, Patricia, but how big is this snake as far as length and weight? Any idea on age? I assume by you referring to it as "it" that the previous owners never had it sexed. What size prey is it eating?

Are you using the probe plus the actual acurite to measure the ambient temperature of the cage? If so, the acurite should be about 1" off of the bottom of the enclosure, not 2" from the top.

    Later,

Mine always uses my gauge to get closer to the top. Probably just what he's doing as well... And yes, anytime I change soemthing in the tank he will roam around and "absorb" the changes...

When I had my thermometer hanging near the top of the enclosure, my bp would sit on top of it to get closer to the lid.

Unfortunately that was also too close to the heat light, so I put the thermometer on the bottom just to be safe.

    Length: About 22"
    Weight: 120g
Age: Supposedly about 6 months old
    Gender: No clue.
Food: Hopper mouse, but looks ready for the next size up.
It's also "it" because it has 2 names that we can't decide between, LOL!

If so, the acurite should be about 1" off of the bottom of the enclosure, not 2" from the top.
I moved it down, thanks so much!

Honestly, all it needed while hanging onto/around the Acu-Rite was a pair of shades to complete that totally cool look!

haha I've learned the hard way which snakes in the rack I should not put a thermometer in a tub with. Chesters way of "sticking it to the man" is to take it and throw it in the water bowl so it doesn't work properly anymore.

I legitimately cracked up at that. I have a snake that "sticks it to the man" every day since Ive had her. Shes been with us for two weeks now and everyday since the 3rd Ive had her she has flipped her water bowl over, and then coiled up outside her hide and has been "looking" at me. After I change everything out, guaranteed within the next day she'll flip it again, and be in the same position looking at me. Im telling you shes doing it on purpose. Ive used like 3 diff bowls on her now, each heavier than the last. But she IS a 1500gm girl so I guess she's just being a little sheeze. Shes driving me crazy and Im at the point where I'll sell her if she continues her bad behavior lol.
