    thermostat

What thermostat would you suggest. I know helix and herpstat nd is suggested over most but what about the cheaper ones. I saw one on bigappleherp for 40 would that be any good for a couple months or should I sell my first born to get the helix

I only have personal experience with the Herpstat and I love it. I have friends that have Helix as well and swear by them. Honestly th e cheaper the thermostat to me the more likely it is to fail. I'd rather buy the higher end one that I know is more quality built than the cheaper one.

Either the Helix/Herpstat or I know the lamp dimmer that you can pick up at lowes for about 10 dollars is recommended. If you get a dimmer and a reliable thermometer, you can figure out what setting to put the dimmer on even though it wond have a nice digital display like expensive thermostats.

Some people here (including myself) use the Repti temp 500r. For $30, I think it works great for a single enclosure. Just make sure to have it backed up like any other tstat with a light dimmer and you're golden.

I already had the thermometers, so I was set to go.
Some people like it, some don't. But hey, it works.

I used just dimmers before I got the 500r, and I am SO glad I don't have to adjust the dimmers every hour.

    Re: thermostat

On the reptile basics site I think they have a johnson thermostat for $80 that has a good display and is calibrated, but if you want to go cheap just adjust the reptitemp to your thermometers, just put the 2 probes next to each other. As always with a cheaper thermostat get the $10 light dimmer switch from the hardware store in case the t-stat fails.

When these fail they typically fail in the on position and can burn your snake. The more expensive t-stats have a failure setting that defaults to off. As to how realiable this is I can't say, I don't have one yet.
