How can you tell if your snake is a het?
Would I have to go to a lab for some testing or are there signs that he/she will show?

Re: How can you tell if your snake is a het?
The only way to know if your snake is het and what it's het for is by knowing it's parents, or by having it prove out through breeding. There are no tests for it other than the test of time and breeding.

Re: How can you tell if your snake is a het?
If you are talking het for a recessive trait, then the only way to know for sure if to breed it out and prove it.
Lab testing would be theoretically possible, but I'm pretty sure there isn't enough known about the BP genome to know what they are looking for.
Certain morphs have "markers", but if those worked 100% of the time, it would no longer be considered a recessive trait, but just a subtle co-dom.
Of course, reputable breeders keep track of which babies are 100% hets, so that is another way you might know.

not to mention a pcr test for genetics would cost more then the het was worth unless its het for something completely rare

By buying from a reputable breeder that will guarantee the genetics.

Re: How can you tell if your snake is a het?
There are only a few ways to tell. If you bred it's parents together and got him, you would know if he is a het. Though, it seems like you did not breed his parents to get him. The other ways to tell his breeding him with a female then breeding the babies back to him to see what the recessive gene was. Or, you could breed the babies to each other (well, once they get old enough). Though, some babies could carry the gene while others will not, so if you breed him with only one female who doesn't carry the gene, you won't get the morph he is a het for. You may just have to breed all the brothers and sisters together and see what you get. Remember, you can only inbreed snakes a few times before they start to get problems mentally and/or physically. You will have to breed him out to see, but you may never know if he is a het or not.
