    Sick snake

Well I went to a reptile show this weekend and picked up two more adult female snakes for about 85 bucks. I also had 3 of my 4 snakes sexed and my guesses for sex was correct 2 girls one boy. So now for the bad news I had the new boy has prolapse (i think that is what it is called) basically and infection or irritation of the hemipeins, which we are treating with neosporin and a dry clean enclosure. The even worse news is one of the snakes I picked up hopefully has a respiratory infection (hopefully as opposed to the alternative IBD (i think)). This is from my lack of knowledge on what to look for, when choosing a snake. For right now we are keeping the temperatures a little higher then normals as well as elevating the humidity and keeping her quarantine in a separate room. My funds are extremely limited as far as I can go for now so this is the best I can do. Obviously if the snake gets worse then I will find a herp vet and take them in for a positive diagnosis. But anyways hope for the best for her. Also any other suggestion will be greatly accepted, but dont just scream take it to the vet.

From my experience with RIs you need to go to the vet....it's only going to get worse on its own. If you don't want to pay for a full visit but can confirm thats what it is, ask if you can purchase the antibiotics on their own. They aren't very expensive and should help you snake recover. Either way I'd seek treatment asap...and I hate to say this, but if you can't afford a vet visit, you can't afford the pet.

    Good luck!!

The only way to treat an RI is with antibiotics from your Vet. They aren't insanely expensive or anything, but try to get it done as soon as possible to avoid a ton of injections.
I think there is actually a really good thread on here somewhere about treating a prolapsed hemipenes. Try using the search function to see if anything pops up.

    Re: Sick snake

the antibiotics are going to depend on how severe the RI is.. Some may take several injection for a couple of weeks then some may take a couple of months to clear up..

    Just as an example,

My girl developed an RI when I first got her. She was about 3 months old, and had symptoms for less than a few days (took her in as soon as I noticed). She needed baytril, which I injected orally for a couple weeks. The antibiotics were about $25, but the whole appointment was over $150. I definitely don't regret taking her in for a full check-up, always better safe than sorry. Your pets are dependent on you for all aspects of their care.

Hope that gives you somewhat on a better idea of RI treatment.

Just in case all is wondering I took the snake to the vet tonight and she has a bacterial infection/pneumonia. He gave her a shot of antibiotics and gave us some antibiotics to give her once a day. Total vet care was 118 bucks* On a side note she was prior un-named but after the fit she threw in the vets office. We have now named her Hissy-Fit or hissy for short. When she is feeling a little better I will post some pictures but the good news is she is not contagious unless they exchange saliva so keep them in separate enclosures and dont let them share water dishes (that's a given on both)

    Re: Sick snake

If a refund was an option I would have taken it. Unfortunately I bought it form a reptile show and the persons had no name or buisiness cards. I also got no reciept
