Love at first sight! (my first BP)

    Hi everyone!
Since people around here seem to love photos, and since I just became a proud new snake mom, I wanted to share some of the first pictures I took!

Be warned though -- they are from my cell phone!
I promise to post better ones once I get my hands on a better camera.

Here he is, just arrived from BHB Reptiles! I'm very glad I decided to order from them, as he seems very healthy and tolerated the first handling very calmly despite just arriving from that long trip -- no curling into a ball or anything!

He has a lot of pronounced "alien head" patterns on his sides. Some of the aliens even have "mouths"! He stared at me for a long time as I held him, tasting, tasting, tasting... he is so adoreable, it was definitely love at first sight on my part!
Now I just have to think of a name...

Here he is in his new home! The cool whip hides are a temporary fix as we are having a bizzare shortage of plastic flower pots in La Crosse. I was originally going to go with the homemade hides made from plastic flower pot saucers, as described in one of the stickies.
(The humidity/temp is also a bit low as I had the cage open for a while)

Here is how my 10gal terrarium is set up, in case anyone has any suggestions. I'd also like to thank everyone who put work into making the BP care sheet, stickies, and general posts for all their help!

    That looks fantastic!
The only thing I suggest is putting the probes under the substrate, and not using repti-carpet. It is an arse to clean and is a breeding ground for bacteria, mold, and all types of nasties.
Paper towels look nice and are much easier to dispose (aspen, newspaper, and cypress mulch are all also very good.)

Everything looks great! And x2 with the repti carpet... You'll probably want to get rid of that stuff after a while. It's a pain.

    Thanks guys!

I got the repti-carpet because I heard that it's useful for keeping your snake from directly touching the hot surface of the UTH if he decides to burrow. The probes are on top of the repti-carpet and I'm using repti-bark as a substrate on top of that (the one pic doesn't show it).
If it's going to get really gross, though, I'll toss it after my first tank cleaning.

If the repti bark is going on the top of it, you might not have problems. But then again, the liquid from the urates might get on it. If that happens...lol just toss it out and stick to repti bark or aspen or something.

Re: Love at first sight! (my first BP)

I use Repticarpet only on the warm side. I cut it into peices a little larger than the footprint of the hide and use it as an additional barrier. If you do this just make sure that the substrate you cover it with is not too thick so the heat will radiate. I just change out the the Repticarpet each week when I clean the cage and change substrate. Then I wash the carpet and put it back in line for future use...

I always use Repti-carpet, and put substrate on top, like you, however I use aspen. I actually have two repti-carpets, when I clean I grab the edges and pull most of the substrate up all at once, and then replace the Repti-carpet with a clean one, and then I clean the dirty one. Its a pretty useful system, and never had any problems with it. Your set up looks fine!

Also consider the cheesy background/foamboard idea stolen! I will most likely be using it in the near future.
