ok this is taken about 12 miles from the iraq border, from my father, he has seen a few other species of what i think are uro's but he has yet to get a pic for me, but he says these ct def. like monitors, just curious on species etc? sry best pics i've got. i'm thinking about savanah? but not 100% hehe.

well i'll let him know, he says there's tons of them there, he's got some pics of some snakes and lizards he doesn't know about either so i'm gonna try to hopefully have some more for you guys soon

Looks like varanus griseus(aka sand monitor, Iranian desert monitor. They are a CITES I animal. You might want to post the pictures over at www.varanus.nl for an exact ID. I believe a few years ago some army documentary over in Iraq was seen by one of the varanus biologists and they saw a monitor that had not been classified in the footage. I believe they were able to investigate the area and classified a new species. Interesting stuff. Thanks for showing the pictures.

NP i sent him the link you sent to the zoo, and i'll have him read it, he said most of them are usually really dark and he rarely sees them till just the last few weeks and the few he's been seeing are really bright colored, sry for the pic it's off his cell phone hehe
