I got a virus on my desktop somehow and now my internet wont stay open and it doesn't want to shut down. I ran avg antivirus but it is telling me that it found nothing wrong. So I am planning on running the recovery disk and just starting fresh, but the problem is, I NEED to burn all my pictures first but when i try it tells me that "windows was unable to move files". Any ideas on how I can save this pictures.

What program are you using to burn the files to a disc?

Hi,

I would try using one of the online virus scanners to double check and see if any of them pick it up and give you a name for it.

Once you have a name you can search for removal tools (usually on the virus scanners site ) and try and get to the recovery stage. No sense in having toi start over if you can avoid it.

Don't be talked into paying for anything from any of these scans though.

And make sure the sites you let run scans or anything on your computer are legitimate. There are evil sites out there posing as good ones.

I would try to clean it out first. if that wont work...
you could configure it as a slave and access it with a different computer. Or boot up a fresh os on a second hard drive as master and your old drive as slave.
it is easy to do. just move the jumpers on the drives to the correct spot and plug it in.

AVG is a pretty good program, so if it's saying you're clean you might not be updating it daily. If you do the daily updates, you probably have other issues. What makes you think it's a virus, it you anti-virus software shows up clean? You could try running a few anti-malware programs, like Spybot S&D, Ad-aware and System Care. There are a bunch of freeware apps on www.majorgeek.com that you can run a couple of times and do a couple of restarts, and see if that gets you anywhere. Then you can try a system restore without deleting your documents or settings. If that doesn't work, I would do what the post above says and get a new HD, install an OS on it, then add your current drive as a slave to pull your documents from. Then you will be free to format it and get back to where you want to be without losing too much, or wasting a bunch of time running your virus scan and wondering why it's still jacked up.

Thank you guys for your answers I will try some of the stuff tonight and see how it goes. The reason I think it is a virus is because my trail version of mcfee says it has found virus' but i have to upgrade to the full version to clean them. so i downloaded avg and had it do a scan which pulled up nothing. So this thing has me confused. The computer was running fine and then i went to copy a file off of my brothers jump drive and that is when it started to act crazy. But yeah like i said I will try some of your suggestions and see if they help out at all

Hi,

Look in the logs from the macafee trial and get the name of whatever it found and then google that.

Also I hope you aren't saying you have two virus scanners installed on the computer at the same time as the really, really, never works out well.

Well then maybe that is one of my problems. LMAO. I will get to deleting one of those then. hmmmm. I guess you learn something new every day

Download and run HijckThis. Restart, and then install and run Zone Alarm by Checkpoint Security.
