sexing baby BP's
Well, my first clutch is moving around now, so thats awesome! I guess mynext step is sexing the babies. I have never tried popping a baby, I am pretty good with adults, sub, and even little 100 gram ones, but never tried a hatchling, is it any harder than on adults? I will be trying tonight after I shower and eat dinner, just wondering what options I have in the meantime.
I hatched 1 pastel and 4 normals....bllleeeeeeeh, but it beats dead eggs any day of the week!
My first morph!

It's 10 times easier on babies. Just be careful.

Re: sexing baby BP's
I don't off hand, but they look just like the adult ones, just smaller and easier to push out.
Males look like RED eye stalks of snails, without the eyes
Gals are just pink.

Re: sexing baby BP's
I was kinda hesitant with my first hatchlings also. It's not that difficult, pretty much the same as with older ball pythons, just a whole lot smaller. With my first ones, and with less confidence than I have now, I also probed my little ones after about a month.
It's best to wait until after their first shed.

Re: sexing baby BP's
Just do it gentle and do the thumb roll and the stuff pops right out. New hatchlings (before their first shed) are like handling silk though - there's hardly any friction to their skin at this point. What I did was mark the obvious males - where the penes popped right out - as boys. Any snake that didn't show penes I marked as a girl with a question mark. Then I went back and re-popped all the possible females a number of times to re-check my results. It was a lot easier popping them after that first shed when they aren't so darn slippery.
Oh be ready to get peed on! LOL
