IF one hide, hot or cold side?

So i've read a bit about people who have their bp's in a tub only having one or no hides. I'm moving my 1100g-ish girl into a 40qt (from a 20gal) and was wondering, If I only have one hide, should it be on the hot or cold side?

Setup will be: no rack 40qt tub, 2 pieces of 11" flexwatt, dimmers + thermostat = homemade proportional thermostat, cloth and foam boarding to semi surround the tub.

If I put 2 hides in, she'll have almost no room to move around. So, hot or cold side?

I place my one hide over the hot side, they tend to carry it around the cage like a hermit crab.

In my 32qt tubs, I only use one hide which is placed on the hot side. When they thermo regulate, they simply bury themselves in the bedding on the cool side.

Same here. The hide is on the hot side and they will move it wherever. Sometimes they will also go under the unprinted newspaper on the cool side.

My concern about this is if I put 2 hides, there will be no room to move around. I don't know though...

What are you using as hides? I have my BP in a 48qt tub, and I have room for 3 hides in there, as well as a water bowl. Believe me, the snake will just as easily go on top of the hides if it needs to get around .

I agree with crawdad - you should have plenty of room for hides. They shouldn't be oversized - just big enough for the snake to squeeze into! Like he said if they want to get anywhere, they'll just go over it. It's a much better idea to have hides on both the hot and the cool side, so the snake doesn't have to choose between feeling secure, and thermal regulation. No hides at all sounds horrible...it would make for an extremely stressed out snake.

I use hides for hatchlings only, otherwise no hides AND no stressed out snakes.
Hides for the hatchlings go over the heat source.

Hides in tubs (for most snakes) isn't a necessity IMO

I should have said there is no absolutely correct way to set up a tub, just what works for you.

If your snakes are stressed and show it, by all means use a hide.
If your snakes never used a hide and refuse the hide you offer, by all means use no hide.

Snakes will tell you what they want by their actions, you just have to figure out what their telling you
